PlayStation 3 has sold over 5 million units in the U.K.

The PlayStation 3 has sold over 5 million units in the United Kingdom, according to GfK Chart-Track information cited by Sony in a press release earlier today.

The push over the 5 million mark is attributed to the launch of the new, Super Slim model of the PS3, which launched with a 500GB model, and will also receive a 12GB "family-friendly" model tomorrow — the latter of which can be expanded with a standalone 250GB HDD, which will hit retail even later this month.

"This is another historic moment for the PlayStation brand, and something I'm incredibly proud of," Sony VP and managing director for the U.K. and Ireland Fergal Gara said. "I'd like to thank all our consumers, retailers and 3rd party partners for helping us achieve this figure, and look forward to continued success."
