Steam for Linux beta is now open to everyone
The Steam for Linux beta client is now available to all Steam users and those who wish to take part in the beta can download a copy of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS from Steam (if they don't already have it) and begin accessing Steam games that have been optimized for Linux.
Players who take part in the beta will be able to play Portal, Team Fortress 2 and Serious Sam 3 BFE, while Left 4 Dead 2 is planned to be ported to and optimized for Linux (Ubuntu, specifically).
The Steam for Linux beta began in November but was available to select Steam users only. The beta is now open to everyone.
