Carmageddon: Reincarnation developer Stainless Games has reached its goal of $3.5 million of additional funding for the game with the help of an investment by Bullfrog Productions co-founder Les Edgar, the studio announced today.
"The Carmageddon name is one we all want to see rise again, and I know that in the hands of its original creators, we're bound to get the best out of the brand," said Les Edgar, who also previously served as vice president of Electronic Arts' European studios, in a press release announcing the privately sourced funding. "I'm delighted to be on board and helping make the project happen."
The additional funding will allow Stainless to bring Carmageddon: Reincarnation to next-generation platforms, as well as its originally announced platform of Windows PC and the stretch goal platforms of Mac and Linux. Last October, Stainless ported the original Carmageddon to iOS; an Android version is on the way.
"We are delighted to have fully funded Carmageddon: Reincarnation without having to go outside of the collective of our own company, shareholders and fans," said Patrick Buckland, CEO and co-founder of Stainless Games, in the press release. "It allows us to maintain a true independence and creative control whilst not having to compromise quality or content by budgetary constraints."
Stainless raised more than $625,000 for the development of Reincarnation, a modern re-imagining of the studio's original Carmageddon from 1997, on Kickstarter last spring. The company initially planned to launch the game on an iterative basis, releasing parts as the developers finished them. But Stainless announced last December that it was securing additional funding for development and would be "extending the project further, both in timescale and scope" as a result. The studio now believes it will take "the best part of 2013" for Reincarnation to be completed.
