A eulogy for LucasArts

Photographer and Lucasfilm CG/Lighting/FX Supervisor Joel Aron and LucasArts composer Jesse Harlin collaborated to create "A Eulogy for LucasArts," a collection of portraits accompanied by moving words celebrating the people of LucasArts.

"Ask gamers to recall George Lucas' gaming company and they'll tell you about fulfilled childhood fantasies inside the cockpit of a TIE Bomber or laugh with you about insult sword fighting," one caption reads.

"The people who lived their lives making games for LucasArts did so because they loved to make games for LucasArts and its fans," read another. "In large part this was because most of us were fans before we worked there."

Disney announced last week that it was closing the game design studio because it was moving from internal development to a licensing model, meaning game development of former Lucasfilm-owned intellectual property will be handled by third-party developers.

Shortly after Disney's announcement, Raven Software released the single player source code for the two Star Wars titles it developed for LucasArts, Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast and Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy "as a gift to the persistently loyal fanbase for our Jedi games and in memory of LucasArts."

LucasArts was founded in 1982 as the game development branch of George Lucas' Lucasfilm. The studio was highly regarded and much-loved for its adventure games and Star Wars-based titles.
