PlayStation at E3 2013: From PS4 to Vita and everything in between

PlayStation C.A.M.P. puzzle game Open Me! brings two Vitas together for puzzle box magic

Thank PlayStation C.A.M.P. for some of PlayStation's most interesting and offbeat titles. The program has spawned creative video game works like echochrome, Tokyo Jungle and the upcoming invisible adventure Rain. It's also spawned Open Me!, a unique augmented reality puzzle game coming to PlayStation Vita later this year in North America.

Open Me! for PlayStation Vita didn't garner much attention at Sony's E3 booth this year, but we became enamored with the quirky multiplayer puzzle game after stumbling into it at last year's Tokyo Game Show (where it was known as Box! Open Me). The...

Outlast is a stealth horror game designed to make the player suffer

The scariest thing about Outlast isn't its mountain asylum setting, or even the thing stalking you through the bloodied building, it's that the game features a hide button.

The ability to hide isn't always there and it's not the only thing you can do in the game. Sometimes you can run, crouch, climb. What you can't do, no matter how desperate things get, is fight back.

"The core gameplay experience is about no combat," Red Barrels' co-founder Philippe Morin tells me before I have a chance to play the PC and PlayStation 4 game. "It's about having the player suffer."

Outlast tells the...

1001 Spikes and the masocore thrill of a thousand deaths

There's an attractive cruelty to 1001 Spikes, 8bits Fanatics' retro-styled side-scrolling platformer. Every step you take forward as protagonist Aban Hawkins is a step closer to death — death by spike, by scorpion, by poisonous blowdart, by collapsing platform, by fireball. Hawkins dies over and over and over again, which is both the most masochistically fun and frustrating part of 1001 Spikes.

Nicalis says the game draws inspiration from 8-bit games Spelunker and Challenger, influences apparent in 1001 Spikes' difficulty and retro aesthetic.

At E3 last week, we played 1001 Spikes on a...

Publishers bringing Xbox One-like limitations to PS4 would be 'surprising,' Sony exec says

PlayStation exec Scott Rohde, senior VP of World Wide Studios America, told Polygon that it would be "surprising" if third-party publishers brought the kinds of access limitations present on the Xbox One to the PlayStation 4, that Sony's patents in the area of used games aren't indicative of policy and that while trading or selling physical discs should be easy, the world of digital sales is anything but.

During Sony's PlayStation press conference on Monday, Jack Tretton said, "When a gamer buys a PS4 disc, they have the rights to use that disc, resell it, lend it to a friend or keep it...

The PlayRoom for PS4 unlocks the fun and future of the DualShock 4

After playing with Sony's The PlayRoom at E3, what is essentially a collection of slick tech demos and mini-games, I wish the PlayStation 4 had included the PlayStation Camera in the box. The camera, when paired with the DualShock 4's lightbar and the gamepad's motion sensing tech, is capable of some amazing tricks.

Created by a team of 10, The PlayRoom is not planned as a retail product at this point, but it's a promising peek at new control schemes that could come to PS4.

Nicolas Doucet, a producer at Sony Computer Entertainment who works in Sony Japan Studio's internal development...

Mark Cerny talks Knack and PlayStation 4

Mark Cerny is system architect for PlayStation 4, lead designer on launch title Knack and the man who introduced Sony's new platform to the world last February.

Polygon caught up with Cerny at Sony's E3 booth to take a look at Knack, his newest character-based game. The PS4 title is the latest in a series of games he has created that stretches back through Sony lore, including Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank; Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot.

"Every time you make a game you need to have a core concept for it," said Cerny. "In this case I thought it would be very interesting to make a...

The Witness is an adventure-puzzle game about non-verbal communication

On the spectrum of influences, The Witness, developer Jonathan Blow's upcoming game, lies somewhere between Myst, Snake and the TV show Lost. He admits that's both "weird" and "unconventional," but he's clearly happy that Sony is bringing it to the PlayStation 4.

At a closed-door event at E3 2013, Blow started the game from its beginning and gave live commentary about his intentions, hopes and goals for the game that will make its console debut on PlayStation 4, the platform on which he played through the game.

Some of The Witness' influence may be esoteric — like Myst, for example, it...

Navigating a Somali war zone with supernatural help in Beyond: Two Souls

Beyond: Two Souls takes place over 15 years in the life of protagonist Jodie Holmes, and her adventures include a stint as a CIA operative. In the E3 demo of Beyond, which we watched Quantic Dream co-CEO Guillaume de Fondaumiere play, Holmes found herself on a tough mission in Somalia, and the main thing keeping her alive was her supernatural companion, Aiden.

According to de Fondaumiere, this sequence is from the last third of Beyond, with Holmes having been recruited by the CIA and trained to be a soldier. The agency sent her into Somalia to kill a warlord named Jamaal, a mission that...

Gran Turismo creator on the past, present and future of the franchise

There aren't many people who've made a career creating a franchise that spans the entire lifetime of a company's consoles. Kazunori Yamauchi is one of those men. He's led the development of the PlayStation's flagship racing franchise since there have been PlayStations to develop for. And he remembers how it all began.

Many years ago now, at a time when next-gen consoles were measured in double-digit bits, Yamauchi sat down to prototype a realistic racing simulator.

With the tools at his disposal, he created a Formula 1 car and a simple oval track, all of which he modeled himself. As the...

Opinion: It's better if no one wins E3

In short, Sony maintained the status quo, and was rewarded with one of the loudest and longest rounds of applause I've heard at a video game press conference that didn't end with everyone getting something for free.

The elated reaction called to mind the winning blow of a gladiatorial fight. How fitting that Sony held its press conference at the USC Memorial Sports Arena and Coliseum complex.

How fitting the conference was held at a Coliseum.

Console gaming, you see, is a blood sport that began nearly two decades ago when Sega and Nintendo fought to the death with blunt marketing jargon...

The Last Guardian 'on hiatus,' Tretton says (update: Yoshida says it's in 'active development')

Team Ico's long overdue next title, The Last Guardian, is on hiatus but hasn't "gone away," Sony Computer Entertainment of America CEO Jack Tretton said today in an interview with GameTrailers.

Asked about the game that was originally due out in 2011, Tretton said that it's one of many projects circulating at Sony's global network of studios.

"I think the cool thing about our worldwide development studios is we have so many projects out there from so many great teams," he said. "Projects never ultimately go away, so The Last Guardian has certainly not gone away, but it's on hiatus right...

PlayStation 4 third-party publishers can dictate their own DRM terms, Tretton says (update)

The PlayStation 4 won't have any DRM restrictions for Sony's first-party games, but third-party publishers will dictate their own DRM policies when releasing games on the platform, Sony America CEO Jack Tretton just said on GameTrailers.

"Well, I mean, we create the platform, we've certainly stated that our first-party games are not going to be doing that, but we welcome publishers and their business models to our platform," Tretton said. "There's gonna be free-to-play, there's gonna be every potential business model on there, and again, that's up to their relationship with the consumer,...

PS4 hard drive is user-replaceable

The PlayStation 4's only model at launch contains a 500 GB hard drive, but users can swap out the storage for a hard drive of any size, a Sony representative confirmed to Polygon today.

Sony is continuing a trend from the current generation: Every model of the PlayStation 3 included a user-replaceable 2.5-inch hard drive.

The Xbox 360 hard drive is replaceable, but only with a proprietary Microsoft unit, not any standard 2.5-inch drive. The same is true on Xbox One, but the upcoming console will allow users to plug in a USB external hard drive that can be used for the same functions as...
