San Diego Comic-Con 2013: next-gen, toys and more

San Diego Comic-Con 2013 runs Thursday, July 18, through Sunday, July 21, and will be filled with games, public hands-on with next-gen consoles, toys and more. Polygon's on the scene, so stay turned to this StoryStream for all the news.

Disney Infinity's Toy Box gives players freedom to create, but requires patience

The marketable appeal of Disney Infinity is its huge stable of Disney and Pixar characters, all of them available for purchase in the form of collectible toys and play sets that can be imported into the game. But the longterm draw may be the game's Toy Box mode, where players will be able to game worlds from scratch.

Infinity's Toy Box mode is likely where many players will spend the majority of their time: creating game rules and levels from scratch, tweaking their custom-made games and playing in their sandbox. During our hands-on time with a near-final build of the game at Comic-Con, we...

The Wonderful 101's multiplayer mode is pure chaos

Platinum Games' "mass hero action" game for Wii U, The Wonderful 101, is a challenging experience when playing by oneself. Wrangling dozens of citizens, aligning them with your superheroic cause and battling giant monsters and robots, can be dizzying.

In the game's competitive-cooperative multiplayer mode, leading a team of superheroes becomes a rainbow of beautiful chaos.

At San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, Nintendo's gaming lounge offered a preview of The Wonderful 101's five-player mode, an option that easily out-bonkers its single-player campaign mode. In the build of The Wonderful...

Video Games Live leaves behind yesteryear's bleeps and bloops

Then there was a full orchestra and choir, conducted by composer Austin Wintory, filling the San Diego Civic Auditorium with Journey's ineffable loveliness. And Eimear Noone, bringing Diablo 3's clanging, underworldly strangeness to this forum of capital C Culture.

Video Games Live on Saturday night was another Tommy Tallarico-hosted celebration of game culture, through its music. The noise wasn't just coming from the orchestra and choir, but also from the audience, who are always happy to contribute to the spectacle, cheering, singing, shouting, all broadcast live on the internet via...

Tekken Revolution allows Tekken team to explore off the wall, off-canon creations

At Comic-Con this weekend, Tekken series producer Katsuhiro Harada — with a little help from a room full of Tekken fans — announced a brand-new character for free-to-play fighting game Tekken Revolution. The fan-favorite, known currently as "Female Vampire," was the clear winner, placing first in a Facebook poll and first at Namco Bandai's "The Future of Fighting Games" panel.

The character, one of ten proposed ideas for a brand-new Tekken fighter, is one of about 30 to 40 character concepts that have been pitched but never completed over the years, Harada told Polygon. Some of the...

Saints Row 4's first DLC is a mockumentary of cut content

The first downloadable add-on for Saints Row 4 will offer a "pastiche of all the things that were cut out of the game," Volition creative director Steve Jaros said at Comic-Con, and will be presented mockumentary-style with the game's characters explaining why the developer pared down certain features.

Those nixed features include things like a flying, fire-breathing dragon and a Bollywood-style dance number, content that proved to be too resource-intensive for Saints Row 4. The game's first downloadable content, titled Enter the Dominatrix, is expected about six weeks after Saints Row 4...

Truth and fantasy in Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag

The formula is always roughly the same. It demands a flinty central character who clambers across architecture and arching boughs. Using a variety of dashing weapons, he sneaks around, dispatching those unfortunate goons born on the wrong side of history to shameful eternity.

He moves in time from the Renaissance to the War of Independence to the Age of Piracy, always in search of that wrong to right, that swash to buckle.

This is historical fiction, video game style. Vaguely-approximately, sorta-kinda, the old days.

Let's face it. No-one seriously expects genuine history in a franchise...

Saints Row 4's original ending was a Bollywood dance number

One of the more ambitious ideas cut from Saints Row 4 — like the game's nixed flying, fire-breathing dragon — was a three minute Bollywood-style song and dance number planned for the end of the game, Volition creative director Steve Jaros said at Comic-Con today.

"It was on our schedule," Jaros said during today's Saints Row Super Dangerous Wub Wub Panel, "and we were trying to do it the right way," with Volition looking at choreography and "the right Bollywood song" to license. Jaros said the idea was scrapped when the Saints Row 4 motion capture team detailed the cost and complexity of...

Xbox One controller rumble makes Forza 5 players better drivers, Turn 10 says

The added haptic feedback features in the Xbox One controller are helping players become better drivers in Forza Motorsport 5, said Turn 10 Studios creative director Dan Greenawalt today. Speaking at a San Diego Comic-Con panel focused on Xbox One, Greenawalt said the next-gen controller better relays information about tires and braking in the game.

In addition to featuring rumble in the base of the Xbox One gamepad, a pair of motors near the controller's triggers provide additional rumble. That allows Turn 10 to deliver haptic feedback designed to simulate the collision and vibration on...

More tears for Clementine at Comic-Con

If you needed convincing that Telltale's The Walking Dead has done more to change gaming these last few years than any other title, Comic-Con was the place to be.

Here was a room full of hundreds of people who, overwhelmingly, had completed a five-part episodic point-and-click adventure that relied more on pulling heartstrings than pulling kill-streaks.

There wasn't an empty seat for the panel, entitled 'Behind the Scenes with Telltale Games' The Walking Dead Game Series.' Robert Kirkman (creator of The Walking Dead comic series) as well as Telltale Games' Dan Connors and Kevin Bruner...

Angry Birds Star Wars 2 hands-on: Using Jar-Jar as a weapon

For the longtime Star Wars fan, the ability to launch Jar-Jar Binks' head as a weapon may provide a catharsis that goes well beyond the $0.99 asking price of Angry Birds Star Wars 2.

The dollar price tag of Angry Birds Star Wars 2 will likely just be the starting point for the game's audience, as developer Rovio will sell Angry Birds Star Wars toys — a new line of plastic figures and play sets — that tie into the game. Borrowing a page from the Skylanders playbook, the Telepods, as Rovio has branded them, unlock playable characters in Angry Birds Star Wars 2, like pig-shaped versions of...

Trey Parker and Matt Stone, creators of South Park, said games like The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, EarthBound, Paper Mario and The Legend of Zelda were key influencers in their decision to make South Park: The Stick of Truth. Drawing inspiration from those games, however, led to ambition that got the best of them.

"I really loved playing Skyrim, as many people did," Parker said during a Comic-Con panel today. After getting lost in the expansive world and huge cast of characters of Bethesda's game, "I was like 'Let's do this. This is easy.'"
