EA at Gamescom 2013: Battlefield 4, The Sims 4, Titanfall and more

Electronic Arts is bringing Battlefield 4, FIFA 14, Need for Speed Rivals, The Sims 4, Titanfall and more to Gamescom 2013. EA's presence will kick off with a press conference Aug. 20 at 10 a.m. ET. FIFA 14 on PlayStation Vita may be another roster update (update)

Electronic Arts will release a PlayStation Vita version of FIFA 14, but executive producer David Rutter suggested in an interview with Eurogamer that just like FIFA 13 on PS Vita last year, it will be another mere roster update.

FIFA 14 will be the third PS Vita game in the series. Sony launched the handheld in North America in February 2012, and EA's FIFA Soccer (screenshot above) was part of the launch lineup. Next-gen trailer shows off FIFA 14 footage

EA Sports has released a new trailer for FIFA 14, featuring some in-game footage from the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of the game.

FIFA 14 is set to launch with the new consoles later this year. The trailer, called Living Worlds, features lingering shots of various soccer stadia, crowds, players and match highlight footage, including a strike from cover star Lionel Messi. Next-gen versions of the game have been built using EA's new Ignite engine.

Watch EA Sports UFC's first gameplay footage

EA Sports UFC publisher Electronic Arts debuted gameplay footage of the fighting title at the company's Gamescom 2013 press briefing yesterday, and that segment of the show is now available online.

Dragon Age: Inquisition trailer introduces the inquisitor

Electronic Arts has shared some more story details, alongside a few minutes of Frostbite-powered visuals, of the upcoming Dragon Age: Inquisition during its Gamescom 2013 press conference.

"From the very opening moments of Dragon Age: Inquisition, this is a world on the edge," executive producer Mark Darrah says.

Battlefield 4 getting new Obliteration mode, new map revealed

Battlefield 4 will include a new, bomb-infused multiplayer mode called Obliteration and a seaside map called Paracel Storm, EA announced today at its Gamescom 2013 press conference.

Using the game's "levolution" technology, which is powered by the Frostbite 3 engine and can be seen in the destructible multiplayer environments like those we went hands-on with at E3 2013, no two games are the same, the developer said.

FIFA 14 demo hits Sept. 10, mobile will be free-to-play

A demo for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC versions of FIFA 14 will be released Sept. 10, publisher Electronic Arts announced during its Gamescom 2013 press briefing today.

EA Sports head Andrew Wilson also announced that for the first time, the mobile versions of FIFA 14 will be free-to-play.

The Sims 4 levels up the emotion with new SmartSim (update: can play offline)

The next installment in Maxis’ life-simulating game, The Sims 4, will feature a new technology called SmartSim to "create and control a new generation of Sims," EA announced at its Gamescom 2013 press event today.

Demonstrated by Rachel Franklin, VP executive producer, SmartSim will make it "easier and faster" for players to create homes exactly how they want through the option of selecting pre-designed rooms and crafting them together to create a house. Decor will have an effect on Sims emotions and feelings.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare includes playable zombies, new Boss Mode

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, the upcoming third-person shooter set in the Plants vs. Zombies universe, will allow players to take on the role of zombies and include a new Xbox One-exclusive Boss Mode, developer PopCap Games announced today at Electronic Arts' Gamescom 2013 press conference.

A video showcasing zombie gameplay (which you can see below) included the undead shooting football guns, construction workers with plumbers cracks, manual laborers tossing grenades, a scientist with diabolical weapons and a sports fan with an exploding hardhat made of dynamite.

Plants vs. Zombies 2 getting Far Future update

Plants vs. Zombies 2 developer PopCap Games is working on the zombie defense title's first major content update, Far Future, said Plants vs. Zombies franchise director Tony Leamer during EA's Gamescom 2013 press briefing today.

PopCap launched Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time on iOS last week. In five days, it has been downloaded 16 million times, which makes it EA's most successful mobile launch to date. The studio has yet to announce an Android release date.

Free-to-play strategy game Command & Conquer will feature campaign missions that can be played on your own or cooperatively when it launches in 2014, the developers revealed today at Gamescom.

Battlefield 4 trailer teases Gamescom 2013 appearance

A new German trailer for Battlefield 4 teases the game's upcoming presence at Gamescom 2013.

The video features gameplay interspersed with shots of an elderly man playing. According to the trailer's description, the man has clocked more than 8,000 hours of playtime with the series. Check out the trailer above.

Gamescom takes place Aug. 21-25 in Cologne, Germany, where Polygon will be reporting on-site. Electronic Arts announced last month that it would feature Battlefield 4 alongside titles such as Titanfall and The Sims 4.

Electronic Arts' Gamescom 2013 presence will kick off with a pre-show press briefing Aug. 20, and continue with a booth featuring upcoming games such as Battlefield 4, Titanfall and The Sims 4, the publisher announced today.

EA to showcase The Sims 4 at Gamescom this August

The Sims 4, the forthcoming installment in Electronic Arts' life simulation series, will be showcased at Gamescom this August, according to a tweet today from the official Sims 3 Twitter account.

The Sims 4 will make its appearance on the EA stage, the tweet revealed. EA announced The Sims 4 last month on its official blog, writing that it's headed to Windows PC and Mac in 2014. A representative for developer Maxis said in a subsequent conference call that the next entry will return the game to its "roots."
