Nintendo's new line of NFC-powered toys, called amiibo, will unlock special costumes for players to wear in Mario Kart 8, according to the game's official site. As part of a forthcoming software update to Mario Kart 8, players will be able to outfit their Mii racers with costumes based on famous Nintendo characters.
According to a cached version of the Mario Kart 8 website, the Wii U kart-racing game will support the following amiibo: Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Peach, Donkey Kong, Link, Kirby, Captain Falcon, Samus and Fox McCloud. It appears that those toys will unlock their respective costumes for players' Mii characters to wear.
The amiibo update for Mario Kart 8 is scheduled for Nov. 13, according to the site. The amiibo toys are slated for a Nov. 21 release in North America, though some of the toys Mario Kart 8 supports won't be released until the second wave of amiibo ships in December.
Mario Kart 8's first batch of paid downloadable content, which adds new characters like Link, new tracks and new vehicles, arrives later this month.
Nintendo's "toys to life" amiibo figures will be supported in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Hyrule Warriors, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and more.
Expect more news from Nintendo tomorrow, Wednesday, Nov. 5, when the company broadcasts a new Nintendo Direct presentation.
