Photos with Mario 3DS app lets you pose with Mario, Peach, Goomba and a gift card

Photos with Mario, a new augmented reality app for Nintendo 3DS, will let you pose with the famous Italian plumber, Peach or Goomba — if you buy a $10 eShop gift card available exclusively at Target stores.

Each special edition gift card comes with its own AR card, and the eShop funds are good for 3DS and Wii U games. Using the free Photos with Mario app, which is available in the 3DS eShop, you can point the handheld's stereoscopic camera at a card and watch characters spring to life. A question mark AR card also includes some surprises — like Toad, who appears from a familiar green pipe.

As you can see in the video above from Nintendo's YouTube channel, you can speak to Nintendo's mascots and scan more than one card to watch the Mushroom Kingdom inhabitants interact. After you manipulate the cartoonish heroes to frame your ideal picture, you can also add special effects like bubbles to your compositions and share your snapshots with friends.

Nintendo's next game, Mario Kart 8, is primed for release this Friday, May 30. For more on the kart racer, you can read Polygon's review and watch our video below to get some tips and learn about shortcuts.
