Disney confirms Maleficent and Princess Merida for Disney Infinity 2.0 Edition

Maleficent — the nefarious sorceress and main antagonist of Disney's 1959 animated film Sleeping Beauty — is joining Disney Infinity 2.0 Edition's character roster, Disney Interactive announced during a preview of Maleficent and later confirmed with Polygon.

Held in San Francisco on Wednesday night, attendees saw a presentation from Disney Infinity before the Maleficent screening. The Official Disney Fan Club event's description stated "Disney Interactive is bringing the evil to the next chapter of Disney Infinity."

Maleficent's addition to the sandbox action game was teased by the game's official Twitter account earlier this month. Maleficent is a live-action movie retelling the Sleeping Beauty story from the witch's point of view. The film stars Angelia Jolie as Maleficent and is slated to be released in theaters on May 30.

Disney Interactive also revealed that Princess Merida of DunBroch, the protagonist of animated feature film Brave, will playable in Disney Infinity 2.0 Edition. The company's official Twitter account recently teased the hero's inclusion with an image featuring her iconic flame-colored hair and bow and arrow, accompanied with the phrase "Bring on the Brave."

Executive producer John Vignocchi said during the game's official webcast earlier this month that Disney Infinity 2.0 Edition will launch in September 2014. Disney Interactive and developer Avalanche Software unveiled the latest real-world toy/video game hybrid in April for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U, Windows PC and iOS.
