Gears of War’s arcade-style wave combat mode, Horde, is getting revamped for the upcoming sequel Gears of War 4. Dubbed Horde 3.0, the new version will add features like character classes, buildable defenses and damage bonuses to assist in holding the line against mobs of enemies. Watch the latest trailer above to see some of them in action.
Some aspects of Horde 3.0 will be familiar to longtime Gears fans. Up to five players will face off against 50 waves of increasingly difficult enemies, and every 10 rounds still triggers a boss wave. As in the game’s single player campaign, players will battle against new adversaries: the hulking Swarm and the robotic DeeBees.
Like Gears of War: Judgment’s Survival and Overrun modes, Horde 3.0 will be class-based, with loadout options for Soldier, Sniper, Scout, Heavy and Engineer types. Gear Cards will further power up the characters by increasing the damage of particular weapons or adding carrying capacity for ammunition.
Possibly the biggest change coming to Horde 3.0 is the new Fabricator tool, which allows players to construct defenses, turrets and weapons anywhere on the map to push back the invading creatures.
We expect to hear more details on Gears of War 4 and Horde 3.0 out of PAX West, which kicks off in Seattle this Friday. Gears of War 4 launches on Windows PC and Xbox One Oct. 11.
