poly-NET PC LAN and LAT Protocol Integration
Polygon's poly-NET provides a state-of-the art PC-to-DEC connectivity solution for LAN-based PCs. The poly-NET software product incorporates Polygon's multiple-protocol technology that allows both Digital Equipment Corporation's Local Area Transport (LAT) protocol and the PC LAN protocols to simultaneously operate on a single Ethernet with both a PC LAN and a DEC VAX with no gateways and no rebooting. It works with our poly-STAR terminal emulation software and other terminal emulation programs that support the standard Interrupt 6AH interface for LAT. poly-NET supports the latest industry standard interfaces and is available for the Novell NetWare (ODI) and other Microsoft LAN Manager (NDIS) networks.
Features
Support of multiple protocols on one PC network adapter (LAT & TCP/IP, XNS, NBP, IPX, TLI, etc.)
Cabling simplicity - all PCs, file servers and hosts on one Ethernet
Simultaneous user server versions
Availability of network services
Automated connection to service with Polygon emulators
Multiple concurrent host sessions with Polygon emulators
Dynamic loading and unloading of LAT with Polygon emulators
Ability to load into high memory
Ability to connect to specific services on a terminal server
Service Directories and Connection Management
Most network architectures allow DEC-host multi-cast messages to be passed through to the Polygon software. By listening to multi-cast messages over the network, poly-NET maintains a listing of the servers that are available on the network for connection. The Service Directory is update dynamically as poly-NET "learns" which services are available and which are down at any given time. For large network environments, you can reserve top directory positions for your "Preferred Services."
To the Service Directory, Polygon adds Connection Management with poly-STAR. With poly-STAR and poly-NET, you do not need to memorize a series of network commands to grab the network's attention and address the service you want. You simply select a service name form the directory's menu. Polygon's Connection Management takes it from there. Do you have the same service available on more than one host? In LAT environments, we even do the load balancing by connecting you to the host that has the lightest load.
Multiple Concurrent Sessions
It's like having two or more terminals and a PC on your desk at once. When working with poly-STAR, poly-NET can provide up to twenty concurrent sessions with a variety of connections. You can have all twenty sessions connected on Ethernet or by using the "SET HOST" command, you can use DECnet to connect to systems off the local network for some of your sessions. This allows you to connect to computers across the hall or across the globe. Imagine the time and trouble saved by being connected to all the various VAX applications you need during a day and being able to hotkey between them as necessary. You can hotkey back to DOS and a LAN file server at any time.
Server Versions
poly-NET comes in both single-user versions, for installation directly on individual PCs and server versions. With a server version, you only have to install it once and it can be controlled, maintained and updated much more easily. The server version has a simultaneous user feature that makes it cost effective, particularly for larger installations. The simultaneous user feature allows everyone on the network to access the program, but restricts it to a specific number of concurrent users. The server licenses are available in increments of five (5) users. Additional licenses may be added to existing server licenses through a simple installation option.
