Xbox at E3 2014: All the news collected just for you

What's Microsoft got its sleeve for E3 2014? We've got all of it conveniently collected here for you.

Nighttime in Grave is terrifying and tough to survive

The darkness is your enemy in Broken Windows Studios' Grave, and you'll need to think on your feet if you want to survive the night in this PC and Xbox One title. We played the open-world survival horror title at Microsoft's E3 2014 booth, and came away feeling very lucky that we were at E3 and could bask in the fluorescent glow of the show floor's lights.

Grave is set in the desert, and your only objectives are to stay alive and find out why you're there. You'll spend the daytime gathering supplies, such as gasoline, a flashlight and batteries. As the sun sets, you'll have to choose an...

Exploring a planet and an astronaut in Lifeless Planet

Lifeless Planet has had a long journey from its origins as an early Kickstarter project in the fall of 2011, and the adventure game continues to travel: It's scheduled to be released on Xbox One later this year. And for its creator, Anchorage, Alaska-based David Board, Microsoft's E3 2014 press briefing last Monday represented something special.

Board's Stage 2 Studios had launched the Windows PC version of Lifeless Planet the week prior, a little more than two and a half years after raising more than $17,000 on Kickstarter to fund the game's development. Last Monday, Microsoft announced...

Spencer: 'You've got to sell the console before you can sell Kinect'

That's a far cry from how the Kinect and Xbox One were introduced to the world last May.

"The all-new Kinect is now an essential and integrated part of the platform," according to the press release put out at the time. "By having it as a consistent part of every Xbox One, game and entertainment creators can build experiences that assume the availability of voice, gesture and natural sensing, leading to unrivaled ease of use, premium experiences and interactivity for you."

But a year later, Spencer announced that Microsoft would start selling an Xbox One without the Kinect. Spencer...

Spencer: People buy consoles for games, but everything else differentiates the Xbox One

This week, Microsoft showed it was listening; turning its massive, annual E3 press conference into essentially an hour-and-a-half long video montage of games hitting both this year and in the future.

The presentation kicked off with a succinct introduction by head of Xbox Phil Spencer and then launched straight into the games; back-to-back announcements, trailers, new features, new promises.

After the event, Spencer told Polygon they had discussed even the possibility of not having any introduction.

"We talked about it," he said. "Yeah, it was one of the things, we said, maybe...

Forza Horizon 2 dev considered southern European setting for first game

Forza Horizon 2, the sequel to 2012's Forza Horizon, shifts the setting of the fictional Horizon Festival from Colorado to southern Europe. This open-world offshoot of Turn 10 Studios' Forza Motorsport franchise is focused less on simulating racetrack driving and more on delivering a fun-filled experience that's not nearly as buttoned-up. (Special events in the original Forza Horizon included races against helicopters and planes.) And the change in scenery actually had its roots in the development of the first game.

Playground Games, the studio behind Forza Horizon, is making the Xbox One...

Spencer explains why Microsoft didn't bring Windows games to E3

While the company hosted the press conference, we didn't hear a thing about games for Windows phone or Windows PC gaming, a fact that wasn't missed by Xbox head Phil Spencer.

"I'm head of gaming at Microsoft," Spencer said. "When we're doing gaming strategy, gaming focus inside the company, that's my job. I think in a lot of ways, you could argue gaming on Windows has never been more healthy in that the biggest of the big franchises, League of Legends, World of Tanks, those things dwarf a lot of what we're doing in this console space in terms of users and monetization. They're all on PC."

Fru: getting into the awkward zone of touching strangers

He calls it the "Fru-zone." In any other situation, two strangers touching hands, holding up each other's legs or pressing limbs against each other would be awkward and a little creepy. But when they get into the Fru-zone — a kind of focused headspace filled with the determination to conquer the levels of the video game Fru — all awkwardness melts away. In fact, game designer David Oppenberg says it becomes something of a bonding opportunity.

"Even if players don't know each other, or they're not usually physical, they don't mind touching each other [once they get into the Fru-zone]," he...

Xbox indie Ori and the Blind Forest runs at 1080p and 60fps with no loading screens

Ori and the Blind Forest, the upcoming Xbox One and Windows PC release from independent game developer Moon Studios, will run at 1080p and 60fps, game director Thomas Mahler told Polygon.

Mahler describes the game, which is the first title to come from the studio, as a coming-of-age tale about a forest spirit on a journey following a loss. According to the developer, the team spent a large portion of its four years of secretive developing honing the gameplay, which he likens to Super Meat Boy and Metroidvania games in terms of how controls are pushed to the limit.

Likewise, the game will...

The Division shows new gameplay during Microsoft E3 press briefing

The Division is set in a near future New York City, and the clip shown took place on Christmas Day. Just one month earlier, Barnard explained, a plague was released causing widespread casualties and the general breakdown of society. Holiday decorations could be seen still hanging in the streets.

The scenario began with the players entering an abandoned subway tunnel, moving on an abandoned civic building in the hopes of setting up a forward operating base.

Dead Rising 3's new DLC is 'Super Ultra Dead Rising 3 Arcade Remix Hyper Edition EX Plus Alpha Prime'

Capcom announced new DLC, only for Dead Rising 3 on Xbox One, that delivers the four heroes of the Dead Rising canon in an arcade-action setting that sounds certifiably insane.

Super Ultra Dead Rising 3 Arcade Remix Hyper Edition EX Plus Alpha Prime celebrates Capcom's "31th anniversary," with a riff on the publisher's tendency to add words to the incremental updates of its Street Fighter series. And Street Fighter's cast, plus numerous others from Capcom's stable, will be a part of the action. Mike Haggar from Final Fight, Felecia from Darkstalkers and an enormous M. Harmonix is back to selling Kinect sensors with Dance Central: Spotlight

Dance Central did three years' worth of favors for Kinect on Xbox 360. No other full-price retail game, much less a series, made better use of the device or a more compelling case for its ownership. Microsoft had many reasons for doing so, but when it made Kinect 2.0 a mandatory inclusion with the Xbox One, one could easily imagine it giving dap to Harmonix and mouthing "thanks."

Then Microsoft went and unbundled the Kinect.

That announcement came the morning after Harmonix showed, under wraps, Dance Central: Spotlight for Xbox One, a game whose structure hints at something that could...

ESRB listing outs 'Dance Central: Spotlight' for Xbox One

An ESRB listing has revealed a Dance Central title for Xbox One called Dance Central: Spotlight.

The game offers a standard description of what the past three Dance Central titles have seen: "a rhythm-and-dance simulation game in which players perform dance steps by following the movements of on-screen characters." Downloadable music content, a hallmark of Harmonix's rhythm series, also is mentioned.

No other details are offered; the game is rated T for Teen, mostly because of suggestive lyrics.

The first Dance Central arrived with the launch of the Kinect in 2010; it was followed by...

Fantasia: Music Evolved is definitely grooving to a different beat

After all, who in their right mind would want to spend four years working with a notoriously controlling corporation like Disney on a musical Kinect game that defies categorization? Who would want to reprise a 75-year-old commercial flop movie that, despite its status as a much-loved animation classic, is so much of a different age that it originally depicted a black horse shining a white horse's hooves?

"It's an ambitious product, and that's one of the risks," said lead designer Jonathan Mintz. "Fantasia didn't immediately capture an audience, but over time it grew. It was rereleased in...

E3 Predictions: Microsoft and the Xbox One

There's the section about video games, the section about family games, the one about sports and the one about Kinect. After a few years of watching a handful of executives tweak the script, you feel like playing press conference BINGO, waiting for the latest mention of Fable or Halo to complete a line. Of course, this could be the year they don't devote a chunk of the event to apps and business partnerships, after all, the heads of the company have emphasized a renewed focus on games, but I'll be surprised if at least a portion of the marketing pitch doesn't involve, let's say, HBO Go.
