PlayStation at E3 2014: All the news, videos and reveals

What's Sony got lined up for E3? Not The Last Guardian, that's for sure. Except ... maybe The Last Guardian?

Sony: Indies, third-party games are increasingly Vita's focus moving forward

And that's not exactly surprising, he added.

"When we launched PSP titles, a big talking point was PS2-quality games in your hands," Yoshida said. "It was an amazing experience to play PS2-quality like Twisted Metal on your portable device. But as time went on and the PS3 launched and people started to see next-gen games, that PS2 quality was not enough. People's expectations for the quality just moved on.

"So when we launched the Vita with Uncharted, it was amazing; PS3-like quality in your palm, but as time moved on, you are seeing PS4 quality and people's expectations for the graphic...

Two things need to happen for Project Morpheus to become reality, Sony says

"It's very simple from my standpoint," he said. "Two things have to happen."

The device needs innovative, amazing content, and a lot of it, and it needs to be great. Right now, Yoshida said, it's simply a "good system."

"We have a good system," he said. "People enjoy the Morpheus demo, but it's not enough. It's coming close, but there isn't enough in terms of creating real experiences with a sense of presence.

"You really need to be able to feel that you are standing on the edge of a cliff....

Bloodborne gameplay trailer leaks, revealing more details on From's PS4 exclusive

A new gameplay trailer for Bloodborne, the PlayStation 4-exclusive game from developer From Software, shows much more of the upcoming action role-playing game than Sony was willing to show at E3 this week.

The trailer, apparently created when Bloodborne was known by its working title Project Beast, focuses mainly on gameplay, as opposed to the pre-rendered trailer that debuted at Sony's E3 2014 press conference. That gameplay looks a lot like what we've seen in From Software's Demon's Souls and Dark Souls, though it leans toward two-handed melee and blunderbuss combat.

There are no...

Nothing in the works for a new Demon's Souls, Sony's Yoshida said

While inspired by Demon's Souls, and created by the game's director, it's not a sequel, it's not a spiritual inspiration, it's something entirely new, said Sony's head of worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida.

The game came about after a years-long break in the relationship between From Software's Hidetaka Miyazaki and Sony. Yoshida said Sony went back to Miyazaki to "reopen" that relationship on the suggestion of some producers.

"We had an opportunity to reopen the relationship," Yoshida said. "And going into the launch of PS4, our producers proposed that we should work together with the From...

Murasaki Baby is an unsettling, weirdly heart-warming adventure

In a hands-on demo with this PlayStation Vita exclusive, I take on the role of Baby, a young girl with a bizarre, upturned face. Baby is wandering through nightmarish landscapes in search of her mother, with the hand (or rather fingers) of the player as her only guide. I join the journey in the midst of its journey, during Act 3.

The first thing I learn is that Baby will not move on her own. You have to take her hand by holding down on the Vita touchscreen, then dragging it toward the left or right to urge her along. In her other hand, Baby clutches a balloon. This represents her life — or...

Final Fantasy 14's first expansion pack will be revealed in October

In an interview with Yoshida during E3, he told Polygon that the game's first expansion — what the team is referring to as "version 3.0" of the game — will be revealed at the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival. Multiple Fan Festivals will be held throughout October and November in Las Vegas, London and Tokyo.

"We want the fans to know it first," Yoshida said. "They've been the ones supporting us."

But the wait for an expansion pack doesn't mean waiting for content. Yoshida assured us that Square Enix has a lot of things planned as additions to the game in its series of 2.x patches.

If we ever cancel The Last Guardian we'll tell you, Sony's Yoshida promises

It's been seven years since work started on The Last Guardian, five years since it was announced, and who knows how many rumor posts saying that the game — begun as, and possibly still, a PlayStation 3 title — has been canceled.

Most recently, that common rumor surfaced right before this year's E3.

It's not just the long wait that drives these rumors, the game has run into some significant issues, including the departure of producer Fumito Ueda as a full-time employee at Sony. He does remain on the project as a consultant, but the story of the game's creation remains deeply hidden.

So...

Bloodborne is not Dark Souls; here's how it should set itself apart

There's a very simple explanation for why it's not titled "Dark Souls 3," of course. That franchise is most likely owned by publisher Namco Bandai. But Dark Souls was a spin-off of Demon's Souls, which was itself (like Bloodborne) a collaboration between From Software and Sony. So why not call it Demon's Souls 2? Or "Something Else" Souls?

There's good reason actually: This is Miyazaki and From Software's chance to make some big changes and take bold risks with the proven formula they've mastered. I love all three Souls games for many reasons, but three is a perfect number to stop on — or...

The Witness will have a story, but its puzzles will still teach without words

Jonathan Blow designed puzzles in The Witness to give players all the information they need without saying a word. Some of these puzzles are self-contained, with each next step evolving from rules set down with the first step. Some puzzles, however, require players to search back all the way to what they learned closer to the beginning of the game, compiling experiences to solve them.

Each puzzle introduces an idea that will be needed to solve other puzzles throughout the world. Puzzles involve tracing a path through designs embedded on panels scattered throughout the game. Some puzzles...

Bloodborne has an illness, a journey and a terribly twisted town

Bloodborne pilgrims seeking solace in an ancient city may not get what they're looking for, according to a PlayStation Blog post from Sony Japan Studio's Masaaki Yamagiwa.

Revealed at Sony's E3 2014 press conference, Bloodborne is a Demon's Souls and Dark Souls-like action role-playing game from the director of both games, Hidetaka Miyazaki. The PlayStation 4-exclusive game's story begins with at least two things: a traveler and a journey.

"Bloodborne takes place in an ancient, forgotten city called Yharnam, known for an old medical remedy," Yamagiwa wrote. "Over the years, many...

Why DriveClub will make it rain but not until after launch

Drizzle starts to appear on the Mercedes' hood, streaking its way toward the driver's seat. The skies darken. The roads get slicker. Within a minute, the dozen or so cars in DriveClub are battling not just each other but the elements in the downpour.

As the coupe banks into a turn, the game stops. Art director Alex Perkins, who's been behind the wheel, enters a special mode that frees the camera from the cab and lets it fly free through the world. He uses the opportunity to show just how detailed DriveClub's weather system is. Puddles are forming in the high grass off the road. The rocks...

Dear Sony: You're No. 1 but Microsoft is coming for you. Let's talk about E3

E3 Predictions: Sony and the PS4

This year, Sony will need to do more than excite the hardcore. As the company settles into the PlayStation 4's lifecycle, they'll want to attract the millions of people who don't rush to buy new hardware simply because it exists.

And remember, this is pure speculation. The likelihood that Media Molecule will make an extended appearance, for example, has been reduced to zero. Trading theories is meant to be fun. Keep that in mind in the comments. (Watch on Youtube)
