EA at E3 2014: All the news we know, collected

Battlefield: Hardline doesn't mean Battlefield will be annualized, EA says

The arrival of a second major Battlefield game one year after the last one, Battlefield 4, doesn't necessarily mean that EA and DICE's shooter franchise is aiming for annual releases, according to EA Studios executive vice president Patrick Söderlund.

Instead, Battlefield: Hardline is the product of EA letting its studios work on the games they're interested in making, he says.

"Karl-Magnus [Troedsson], who runs DICE studios, and Steve Papoutsis, who runs Visceral, basically met in Barcelona almost three years ago and they came to me and said 'Hey, we have an idea,'" Söderlund said of B...

Have Faith: Why EA showed so many concepts and prototypes at E3 2014

Instead of showing a big blowout trailer for the next Mirror's Edge, it showed artists creating its heroine, Faith. There was "early in-engine footage" of Star Wars Battlefront and concept art of Criterion Games' next title (but not a name for that game).

The company teased a new Mass Effect by showing artists working at their desks and creators talking about their vision. They promised a new franchise from BioWare Edmonton, but offered little that was concrete.

There were other game announcements, some of which featured real gameplay — not just conceptual prototypes. But the number of...

Criterion’s new world: How Kickstarter inspired the Burnout developer’s next game

We're in a Starbucks down the street from the Los Angeles Convention Center, where in less than 24 hours E3 2014 will be in full swing. But that's not why the general manager of Criterion Games, the developer best known for its Burnout series of driving games, is all smiles. He's radiating good vibrations because a few hours before we met, Electronic Arts held its annual media briefing. And about half an hour into that event, Criterion's parent company unveiled the next game from the studio. Matt Webster is happy because he gets to talk about the game, its unlikely inspirations and how its...

Electronic Arts has stated that Battlefield Hardline will run a PlayStation 4 and Windows PC beta, starting today. The company made the announcement at its E3 briefing.

The Battlefield 4-based game is being developed by Visceral Games alongside DICE. It's set in a cops vs criminals world and features the franchise's trademark abundance of weapons, gadgets and vehicles. In multiplayer mode players choose one of four classes, with access to a variety of weapons. Levolution events, in which large structures come crashing to the ground, alter the maps significantly.

The limited-time beta...

FIFA 15 launching Sept. 23, trailer shows off the emotion of soccer

FIFA 15 will be released Sept. 23 in North America, and its first full trailer, which Electronic Arts showed during its E3 2014 press briefing today, introduces the game's focus on emotion.

Developer EA Canada is bringing the game to life by imbuing players with what it calls "emotional intelligence." They'll react to events in the match appropriately, getting frustrated at missing shots or foul calls and celebrating elatedly upon scoring.

You can watch the trailer above, and check out a full preview later today. FIFA 15 is in development on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, Xbox...

The next Mirror's Edge will show how Faith became Faith

The next Mirror's Edge game will tell the story of how protagonist Faith became the woman she is in the original game, EA announced today during its E3 press conference.

The game will focus on the "building blocks" of Faith, with developers seeking to make her freedom of movement and appearance reflect her life. She needs to look strong, as the game focuses its mechanics on her movements. Developer DICE is working with parkour artists to create and expand on Faith's moves, building on her move sets from the first Mirror's Edge game.

Players will be able to explore multiple paths in the...

EA Sports PGA Tour being developed in Frostbite 3 engine, coming spring 2015

EA Sports PGA Tour is the new name of Electronic Arts' golf franchise, and developer EA Tiburon is making the game in the Frostbite 3 engine, the studio announced today during EA's E3 2014 press briefing.

Last fall, EA Sports and Tiger Woods parted ways, leaving the Tiger Woods PGA Tour franchise without an ambassador. EA has not released a new golf title this year. EA Sports Ignite was announced last May as the engine for all of EA's sports games on the new consoles, but EA Sports PGA Tour is in development on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in Frostbite 3, the technology that powers EA's...
