Timeline: The evolution of Halo

On November 11, Halo: The Master Chief Collection releases for Xbox One.

It's a compilation of the numbered Halo games to date, or as Microsoft refers to them, the games starring Master Chief. In one sense, that's shorthand for saying the collection doesn't include Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach and Halo Wars. In another, the package includes four games with redone visuals and bonus features. Like the Nightfall digital series that we covered earlier today, and access to the Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer beta.

To prepare for the collection's release, we decided to take a look back at how Halo has evolved up to this point — both in terms of the mainline series, and the offshoots, competitors, canceled titles and spin-offs — leading up to next year’s Halo 5 (pictured above). Scroll down to the interactive timeline below to check it out.
