What difficulty do you start playing a game and why?

I chose the hardest difficulty on the first go, not only I am in for the challenge (got platinums for Dark Souls, Demon Souls and tons of other hard games), but it also greatly extends the initial playthrough, which is the most important playthrough as it is the first time your experiencing it and you tend to get the most satisfaction out of it.
