How is the consumer protection in the US?

EA shipped a disastrous unstable game in the form of Sim City, the game is in such a bad shape that to many it is completely unplayable. Because of this, many consumers are rightly asking for a refund...however, according to EA, those who bought it through their Origin service won't be getting any refund. Seriously in Europe they can't do this because of strict laws governing consumer protection. Are such laws strict in the US as always? I don't want American gamers to suffer because EA being an evil **** as it is known for.
