1 CommentJapan Review Check: Naruto, 7th Dragon
By Kevin Gifford on Apr 10, 2013 04.10.13
A quick look at the highlights among the games coming out in Japan this coming week, courtesy the review pages of Famitsu magazine: Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm (10/10/10/9, 39 out of 40 points): The CyberConnect2-developed Naruto: Ultimate Ninja fighting games always score massive points in Famitsu's reviews, and this latest one — which actually came out in the US and Europe a few weeks before the Japan debut — is no exception. "Thanks to new battle system features like chain attacks, Awakenings, and ring-outs, there's a lot more of a tactical aspect here," wrote editor Atsuhiro Fujiwara. "The sense of speed is exceptional, and I like the expanded character lineup as well. Load times are an occasional concern with story mode, but in terms of showing off the plot and...

32 CommentsArmy of Two: The Devil's Cartel review: hollow point
By Arthur Gies on Apr 03, 2013 04.03.13
This is supposed to be strategic. At first, it seemed like Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel might build on the cooperatively tuned conceits of the prior two games. No matter what, you're always working in a team, third-person shooting your way through hordes of enemies as you build up "aggro," which can be triggered for Overkill. Overkill grants brief invincibility, increased damage, and a magazine that never runs dry. The wrinkle: You need to draw attention from enemies to build up aggro, which puts you in more danger. This is supposed to be strategic. The idea goes something like this: One member of your two-person team draws fire, while the other sneaks around to flank a position, or whatever other play you decide to call. In reality, the one play is just about all there is,...

The offer is valid to PSN users in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, and although Sony's advertising it as taking place in the month of March, it has already begun. PlayStation Store purchases from today, Feb. 26, through April 1 will count toward the promotion. That also applies to renewing an annual PlayStation Plus subscription for $49.99: According to Pierre Gravereau, senior manager of digital distribution, you won't need to spend the extra penny to get $10 back. By Emily Gera on Jan 22, 2013 01.22.13
Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel is now Australia's third R18+ game, according to an entry the country's official classification board. According to the Classification Board entry for Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel, the board cites high impact violence and strong impact themes as the primary reasons behind the rating. 9 CommentsArmy of Two: The Devil's Cartel's more serious tone is kind of a joke (and that's not so bad)
By Philip Kollar on Dec 07, 2012 12.07.12
And finally, EA will tell you about the new protagonists, a duo of newcomers to T.W.O. (the military corporation at the heart of the Army of Two games). The rookies are named quite simply Alpha and Bravo. Player One and Player Two. EA will also try to tell you that — despite the generic names — these two characters have real personality and depth. Based on my hands-on time with Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel, that last boast is where the cracks in EA's pitch are starting to show. I was able to check out a level early into the game where Alpha and Bravo get to team up with Salem and Rios, the leads of the previous two games. The Army of Two name doesn't seem to make much sense at this point, but what progresses from there is an enjoyable if completely standard third-person...

5 CommentsArmy of Two: The Devil's Cartel has no competitive multiplayer mode
By Griffin McElroy on Nov 01, 2012 11.01.12
Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel will have no competitive multiplayer mode when it launches next March on Xbox 360 and PS3, despite the fact that the series' past two entries had competitive offerings, Visceral Games confirmed today to VG247. Both Army of Two and its sequel, subtitled The 40th Day, let players compete in deathmatch and objective-based modes, most of which partnered them with another teammate to closer resemble the core action of the co-op campaign. For a variety of reasons, the upcoming third installment in the series will lack such a mode. "When we took a step back and looked at what we were trying to achieve," lead designer Julien Lamoureux told VG247, "we just figured, ‘you know what? Let's just put our resources into what we're trying to do, which is a very...
