Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation is the winner of Outstanding Achievement in Video Game Writing, as awarded by the Writers Guild of America, the American association announced. The Ubisoft Sofia-developed title beat out five other nominees including 007 Legends, Assassin's Creed 3, Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two, Halo 4 and Uncharted: Golden Abyss. Writer Jill Murray, who wrote the script alongside co-writer Richard Farrese, tweeted a picture of their award, writing: "Holy crap, we won the Writers Guild of America award for game writing. Ubisoft chief financial officer Alain Martinez said that the publisher was pleased with the performance of the PS Vita-exclusive Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation in an investor conference call held earlier today. Despite the fact that the title wasn't a blockbuster for the company compared to its successful console titles, Martinez said the company was "pretty happy" with how Liberation performed. He also urged developers not to count the Vita out just yet as a potential platform for their games. "Regarding the Vita, what I can say is last year ... we reduced the number of launches, but actually, we did pretty well on Assassin's Creed PS Vita," Martinez said. Assassin's Creed 3 and 007 Legends are among the candidates for the 2013 Videogame Writing Award from the Writers Guild of America, the nominees for which were announced today. Both Assassin's Creed 3 and its PlayStation Vita spin-off, Liberation, were honored with nods from the WGA. Liberation wasn't the only Vita game nominated for the award — Uncharted: Golden Abyss was also selected. Rounding out the list of six are Halo 4 and Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two. Ubisoft and PlayStation Network have coordinated for a PSN flash sale on Assassin's Creed 3 and Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation. Assassin's Creed 3 can be purchased at 35 percent off for $38.99, while the full game and season pass are available at a bundle price of $58.49. Additionally, Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation is on sale by itself for $23.99. Both games can be purchased in a bundle discounted 50 percent for $59.99. Assassin's Creed 3 and Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation, a PlayStation Vita-exclusive, released on Oct. 30. The sale will only run through the weekend.

A bug in Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation corrupts players' save files and traps them in loading screens, according to a thread on publisher Ubisoft's official forums. Players are reporting getting stuck in the Animus loading screen while trying to boot up, and are unable to re-enter the game. A similar time-freezing bug has been reported on the GameFaqs forums, with players losing progress after being forced to restart without saving. "Sorry for the problems you are having," Ubisoft forum manager "Mr_Shade" responded to the thread. Liberation's story asks for more heavy lifting than the game is able to provide Liberation's core storyline follows series newcomer Aveline de Grandpré, a female assassin of mixed heritage whose home is the setting of a power struggle between the Templars and the Assassins. Retailer GameStop has canceled all midnight pick-up events tonight for Assassin's Creed 3 and Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation at its northeast locations in light of Hurricane Sandy, reports Kotaku. "Our top priority is the safety of our employees and customers," a representative for GameStop told Kotaku. "In compliance with directives issued by state and local authorities, stores in the path of the storm will remain closed until it is safe to re-open and midnight openings for Assassin's Creed 3 have been cancelled in the northeast." GameStop encourages those who are planning to pick up the games this week to check with local stores individually regarding re-opening plans.
