Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation review: the price of chains

Liberation's story asks for more heavy lifting than the game is able to provide Liberation's core storyline follows series newcomer Aveline de Grandpré, a female assassin of mixed heritage whose home is the setting of a power struggle between the Templars and the Assassins. Liberation takes the sci-fi framework of previous Assassin's Creed games a step further by presenting the game itself — the one you're playing — as propaganda software produced by a Templar organization within the Assassin's Creed universe. The "real" history of that universe is twisted in the game in order to portray the Templars as the good guys. So Liberation is a virtual representation of a virtual representation of a corrupted retelling of history. With so many layers of abstraction at work, the...

Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation wins Writers Guild Award

Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation is the winner of Outstanding Achievement in Video Game Writing, as awarded by the Writers Guild of America, the American association announced. The Ubisoft Sofia-developed title beat out five other nominees including 007 Legends, Assassin's Creed 3, Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two, Halo 4 and Uncharted: Golden Abyss. Writer Jill Murray, who wrote the script alongside co-writer Richard Farrese, tweeted a picture of their award, writing: "Holy crap, we won the Writers Guild of America award for game writing. This actually just happened." Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation introduced the series' first ever female protagonist, Aveline de Grandpre. However, despite the celebration of the game's writing, the title scored a six out of 10 from Polygon in a...

Ubisoft CFO urges developers to not 'discount' the Vita, pleased with AC3: Liberation sales

Ubisoft chief financial officer Alain Martinez said that the publisher was pleased with the performance of the PS Vita-exclusive Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation in an investor conference call held earlier today. Despite the fact that the title wasn't a blockbuster for the company compared to its successful console titles, Martinez said the company was "pretty happy" with how Liberation performed. He also urged developers not to count the Vita out just yet as a potential platform for their games. "Regarding the Vita, what I can say is last year ... we reduced the number of launches, but actually, we did pretty well on Assassin's Creed PS Vita," Martinez said. "We are close to 600,000 units, so it's a good achievement, we are pretty happy with this figure. So, I wouldn't discount the PS...

Ubisoft historian and writer explain Assassin's Creed 3's history, recommend reading

In a Q&A published alongside a series of Assassin's Creed 3 videos on Amazon, Ubisoft's team historian, Maxime Durand, and Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation writer Matt Turner discuss the texts they used to bring historical context to the games and recommend further reading. "Opinions of what was going on in the colonies before, during and after the Revolution were extremely diverse," Turner told Amazon. "It was important for us to represent as many differing opinions as we could throughout the story as well as allow those ideas to change as pivotal moments came and went. One strategy for achieving that was representing all the different classes, from the governors, to the Colonial elite to the common man and below. We wanted to allow each strata the ability to express their views which...

PlayStation VP of marketing says Sony focusing on PlayStation Plus and PS3, Vita content

Sony plans to focus on PlayStation Plus as well as the PlayStation 3's and PlayStation Vita's content libraries in holiday-season marketing, said John Koller, the company's vice president of marketing for consoles and handhelds, in an interview with GamesIndustry International. The PlayStation 3 may lack heavy-hitting exclusives on the level of Halo 4 this year. But Koller touted the big picture, focusing on the console's existing library of top-tier games and the ones due out in 2013. "You're buying into a system that has not only a great holiday ahead of it," he said, "but also a great future ahead of it over the next few years" — a future including games such as Naughty Dog's The Last of Us and Quantic Dream's Beyond: Two Souls. "This isn't going to be a system that people come...

Aveline of Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation navigates her surroundings through changing personas

Creole assassin Aveline of Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation can manipulate the perceptions of others through the Persona System, navigating the community of 18th century New Orleans through using different disguises, according to a post on the PlayStation Blog Aveline can don three separate and very different guises: that of a lady, a slave, or an assassin. Aveline retains the higher-class privileges of her French father's status; this combined with traits inherited from her African mother allow her to fluidly slip between social strata. As a slave dressed in peasant's clothing, Aveline can easily escape detection as most people will overlook her presence. She can also rile her fellow slaves to cause a public scene, although she cannot use her assassin weapons in this guise. In the...
