Ubisoft responds to Assassin's Creed Unity women character furor

A comment from Ubisoft, provided to Kotaku, said that,"we recognize the valid concern around diversity in video game narrative". In an interview earlier this week, Ubisoft creative director Alex Amancio said that a plan for female characters had been pulled from Unity. "It's double the animations, it's double the voices, all that stuff and double the visual assets," Amancio said. "Especially because we have customizable assassins. It was really a lot of extra production work." His explanation caused an E3-week furore. Former Assassin's Creed 3 animation director, Jonathan Cooper, now working at Naughty Dog, argued that extra female animations should only take "a day or two's work" to create. The issue could hardly come at a worse time for Ubisoft, during a week when the company is...

Ubisoft teases last-generation release of new Assassin's Creed game

Ubisoft may announce and release a new Assassin's Creed game for last-generation consoles alongside new-generation game Assassin's Creed Unity, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot teased during an investors call for the release of its fiscal report for the year ended March 31, 2014. "Assassin's Creed Unity will be released this fall on Xbox One, PS4 and PC. We have not disclosed our plan yet for the Xbox 360 and PS3 SKUs," Guillemot said. "We have made it clear that as a company we expect to continue supporting those consoles for the foreseeable future." Ubisoft announced Assassin's Creed Unity in March as the next major installment in the franchise, and in development for the PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. The game is being developed by 10 different Ubisoft subsidiaries, with Ubisoft...

Assassin's Creed 3 animation director Jonathan Cooper heads to Naughty Dog

Animator Jonathan Cooper, best known for his work as animation director on Assassin's Creed 3 and lead animator on both Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2, has begun working for developer Naughty Dog, according to an update to his LinkedIn profile caught by Game Informer. Cooper's profile on the jobs website also notes an unannounced Ubisoft project that the animator worked on before leaving the studio. Cooper was said to be working on "prototyping a revolutionary new kind of navigation system for next-gen systems." His hiring at Naughty Dog follows a number of resignations at the company, including Uncharted 4 game director Justin Richmond and series creative director Amy Hennig, both of whom recently left the company. Richmond has since gone on to join League of Legends studio Riot...

Ubisoft Q3 earnings down 35 percent

Ubisoft reported a year-over-year decline in earnings for the third quarter of its 2013-14 fiscal year today, and blamed the "console transition" for the drop. The French publisher recorded sales of €520 million ($709.34 million) for the quarter ending Dec. 31, 2013, a decrease of 35.2 percent from the same period one year prior. Sales for the first nine months of the 2013-14 fiscal year were also down significantly, by 24.8 percent from revenue of €1.08 billion (April-December 2012) to €813 million (April-December 2013). The third-quarter sales came in right in the middle of Ubisoft's guidance for the quarter of between €500 million and €540 million. "Over the short term, the high quality of our titles — which is unanimously recognized by gamers — has enabled us to achieve our...

Assassin's Creed: Liberation HD update

Assassin's Creed: Liberation HD presented Ubisoft with an opportunity to fix the mistakes that dragged down the original PS Vita version of the game — to wring out more of the promise that existed in an often broken and frustrating experience. But for the second time, Liberation fails to deliver. Ubisoft has improved Liberation's looks in the transition from the PS Vita to the Xbox 360, but they only took those improvements so far. Liberation HD is still full of blurry textures and goofy-looking animation, failing to match or approach Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag or even Assassin's Creed 3. Surprisingly, Liberation HD suffers from the same texture pop-in problems that plagued the PS Vita release. Buildings, people, docks — even the ground — are sometimes invisible until a few feet...

Ubisoft reports improved fiscal performance thanks to Far Cry 3 and Assassin's Creed 3

Ubisoft maintained solid performance in the first half of the 2013-2014 fiscal year, with the increase in profits being attributed to titles like Far Cry 3 and Assassin's Creed 3, according to the company's most recent fiscal report ending September 2013. During the first quarter of the 2013-2014 fiscal year, the company earned €293 million ($393 million), up five percent from the same period in the previous year ($374 million). In the second quarter, the company's earnings jumped 46.6 percent from the previous year, totalling €217 million ($291 million) versus €148 million ($198 million) from the previous year. The company also attributed the sustained growth to its digital segment, with sales climbing 29 percent from last year to €71 million ($95 million). This was largely driven by...

Assassin's Creed: Liberation HD hitting PS3 on Jan. 14

Assassin's Creed: Liberation HD, a console remake of the 2012 PlayStation Vita Liberation game, has been given a release date on PlayStation 3 of Jan. 14. Posting on PlayStation Blog today Ubisoft Sofia producer Momchil Valentinov Gindyanov stated that the team had set out to "improve upon what worked on the Vita and adapt the gameplay and missions to be the most fun and enjoyable they could be." Liberation on Vita, featuring female African-French assassin Aveline de Grandpré, launched in 2012 as an accompaniment to Assassin's Creed 3 for consoles. Both games were set against a backdrop of 18th Century revolutionary fervor. Reviewing the game at the time, Polygon described it as a "noble effort" dragged down by "restrictive missions, unexplained systems and an unintelligible story." ...

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag and the terrible beauty of naval warfare

One spring day I stood on Portsmouth Dockyards in England, regarding HMS Victory with undisguised rapture. That ship is one of the most beautiful objects ever crafted by mankind. Even leaving aside the romantic bias inherited by my Englishness, she is a thing of heart-stopping loveliness, just as much as, say, the Taj Mahal or a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe. She is also a killing machine, designed explicitly to tear asunder other pretty frigates and ships-of-the-line. Her guns were capable of delivering unimaginable horror to the flesh of men and boys, a service rendered faithfully and efficiently to the Crown during the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 Even so, if you had to choose, from all the weapons and military paraphernalia of the past few millennia — the prettiest gear, the most...
