A new developer diary out from Ubisoft discusses what it's like to have seven studios around the world working simultaneously on Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag.
"One of the things we always kind of laugh about is every minute of the whole week, somebody somewhere in this world is working on Assassin's Creed 4," says game director Ashraf Ismail. While it can be difficult to work with someone you've never met face-to-face, whose personality you don't know, the Ubisoft developers say that it's quite something to watch a global team unite around a game's vision.
"It's incredible when you have so many employees, and we're talking hundreds," says Ismail, "when they all believe in the vision and all push behind it, the results are spectacular."

Ubisoft has released the latest trailer for the upcoming Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, giving a glimpse at the riches to rags story of the title's newest playable protagonist Edward Kenway.
The developer has kept relatively mum about the narrative to come, focusing mostly on open world gameplay and ship combat, but its new footage hints at what can be expected from Kenway. Unlike Connor of Assassin's Creed 3, Kenway appears to be a wholly defiant sort with anarchic sensibilities, who has turned his back on his well-to-do past.
Take a look at our recent interview with scriptwriter Darby McDevitt on the debauchery that will fuel the game's narrative.
Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag takes place in the early 1700s, during the golden age of pirates, and a new video from publisher Ubisoft sets the scene with some historical context.
France, Great Britain and Spain had spent decades carving up the New World, establishing colonies and harvesting the region's bountiful resources, but by 1713, the nations had agreed to a truce through a number of treaties. The period of relative calm was shattered by English sailors who, having become disenchanted with the meager opportunities afforded to them by their king, chose the pirate's life instead.
Black Flag protagonist Edward Kenway navigates the murky waters of the era as he travels around the Caribbean and its eclectic mix of peoples and cultures. The game will feature notable real-life...
The latest installment in Sony's "Conversations with Creators" series features Ubisoft developers discussing the creation of Assassin's Creed 4 for the next-generation PlayStation 4.
In the video, Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag creative director Jean Guesdon and associate producer Sylvain Trottier say that naturally, the PS4's greater power will enable the team to make a better-looking game than that which the current-generation consoles get. "We're going to be able to push the bar visually," says Trottier. "It's a lot more intuitive for our engineers." The current generation of consoles are running at 100% of their power, says Trottier, meaning the PS4 version is going to have details that the Xbox 360 and PS3 simply can't handle.

Silicon Knights' survival horror title Eternal Darkness will have a spiritual successor, Shadow of the Eternals, with details and a crowdfunding campaign set to launch Monday. However, an internet cache for a Shadow of the Ancients crowdfunding campaign might shed more light on the project. Gearbox says the lawsuit against it and publisher Sega for falsely advertising Aliens: Colonial Marines is a "frivolous litigation." Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag lead scriptwriter Darby McDevitt tells us the game's story will be one of "immorality and repentance," and Arkane Studios' Ricardo Bare and Harvey Smith speak about their new fiction novels.
