Assassin's Creed 4 trailer shows next-gen rain, oceans and stabbing

A new Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag trailer focuses on the technology backing the title's launch on next-generation platforms. Water and waves have always been difficult for games to properly render, but new technology like complex shaders and more powerful physics equations help the game realistically simulate the ocean both in shallow water and high seas, says associate producer Sylvain Trottier. "These technologies work together to create the most realistic virtual ocean you've ever seen." Assassin's Creed 4 has new enhanced weather systems, and dynamic lighting means that things like fog and thousands of individual raindrops can be lit from multiple sources. Not all of the next-generation enhancements are solely graphical; the ship-to-ship combat is enhanced by "dynamic navmesh"...

Ubisoft to launch ongoing gaming tournaments open to everyone

Ubisoft announced today that it will launch The Next Level — a new series of competitive gaming tournaments — at PAX Prime this week. The competitive gaming tournament aims to fill the gap between non-competitive gaming and professional eSports, giving players the opportunity to compete against each other across a range of games for the chance to win prizes. The tournaments will be held at conventions like PAX, Comic-Con, Magfest and E3, and regular tournaments will also be held online in select physical locations. Speaking to Polygon, Ubisoft's senior director of player engagement, Josh Milligan said The Next Level offers players something less traditional in terms of competition. "The analogy I draw is eSports is like the post-graduate program for gamers, and there's nothing before...

Video Games Live leaves behind yesteryear's bleeps and bloops

Then there was a full orchestra and choir, conducted by composer Austin Wintory, filling the San Diego Civic Auditorium with Journey's ineffable loveliness. And Eimear Noone, bringing Diablo 3's clanging, underworldly strangeness to this forum of capital C Culture. Video Games Live on Saturday night was another Tommy Tallarico-hosted celebration of game culture, through its music. The noise wasn't just coming from the orchestra and choir, but also from the audience, who are always happy to contribute to the spectacle, cheering, singing, shouting, all broadcast live on the internet via Twitch. "I find it quite wonderful," said Wintory, who was nominated for a Grammy for his score. "I make music for other people. I like working on games because of how much they mean to people. And an...

The sun never sets on Assassin's Creed 4 development, says new dev diary

A new developer diary out from Ubisoft discusses what it's like to have seven studios around the world working simultaneously on Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag. "One of the things we always kind of laugh about is every minute of the whole week, somebody somewhere in this world is working on Assassin's Creed 4," says game director Ashraf Ismail. While it can be difficult to work with someone you've never met face-to-face, whose personality you don't know, the Ubisoft developers say that it's quite something to watch a global team unite around a game's vision. "It's incredible when you have so many employees, and we're talking hundreds," says Ismail, "when they all believe in the vision and all push behind it, the results are spectacular." Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag will hit...
