Battlefield 4 Platoons coming 'very soon,' early access available now

Battlefield 4 developer EA DICE is offering early access to Platoons, an upcoming social feature that allows players to track stats together in groups, according to a Battlelog forum post by producer Jesper Nielsen. A feature in Battlefield 3, Platoons will go live on Battlelog for Battlefield 4 "very soon." DICE is offering a selection of players early access to the feature "to test certain parts of the system" and collect feedback ahead of its full roll out. Those interested in participating are invited to respond to the post with their Battlelog/Origin username. Users who list members of their own existing Platoon have a greater chance of being accepted. Full details are on the Battlelog forums. Karl Magnus Troedsson, vice president and general manager of DICE, confirmed the...

Latest Battlefield 4 PC update aims to fix stability problems

A new update for the Windows PC version of Battlefield 4 is out today, aiming to address server stability issues that have plagued the game since launch. According to the Battlefield blog, the patch will hit sometime later today with fixes for a memory leak issue that occured after level shutdowns, a fix addressing player rank icons on the scoreboard that were failing to update, as well as a fix for users in Asia unable to start Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 on Windows 8.1. This update follows last week's announcement from EA Digital Illusions CE of plans to release a new game update across all platforms later in the month. A post on the game's official blog from junior product manager Tommy Rydling stated the studio is aware players are still experiencing issues with the title. "...

Microsoft investigating reports Battlefield 4 DLC unavailable on Xbox One

Microsoft is investigating recent reports of Battlefield 4 DLC Second Assault being unavailable for Xbox One owners who have purchased Battlefield Premium. The DLC, which includes versions of four maps from Battlefield 3, is exclusive to the console for just under two weeks and is free to those with a Premium subscription; however, the pack is allegedly listed as "null data" when logging on to the in-game Premium store. An EA spokesperson has responded to the issue, stating the company is looking into fixing the matter with Microsoft. "I know some of you have said already that it is being looked into, I wanted to just confirm that for you so you guys have a blue [staff] post to refer to," EA_Rick wrote. "Right now all I can say is that we are aware of this issue and are currently...

Inside Battlefield 4's Second Assault Maps

Due to be released as an Xbox One timed-exclusive at the end of this week, it offers four maps taking in verdant woodland, European post-apocalyptic urban, scorched desert and mountainous vistas. Each map is also very different insofar as how they make use of vehicles, the thing that has long set this franchise apart. There are tight and claustrophobic battles entirely undertaken on foot, while others rely heavily on transportation to get from one side of the vastness at a reasonable rate. Despite this variety, this first Battlefield 4 DLC is a safe option for publisher EA. All of the maps will be familiar to anyone who has played Battlefield 3 extensively, although on an Xbox One and through the lens of developer DICE's Frostbite engine, they are enhanced in terms of their beauty and...

What HealthCare.gov could have learned from Electronic Arts

Responding to a question from Polygon reader VarmintWrangler about whether the U.S. could learn anything from the game industry in the wake of the troubled website launch, Wilson said that he wasn't the best person to comment on the issue, but referred to the launch of EA's own games as examples of lessons that could be applied to the government. According to Wilson, EA learned a lot from the launch of games like SimCity and Battlefield 3, both of which were marred by complex server issues. Taking these lessons, the company was able to ensure a smoother launch for the console version of the recently-released Battlefield 4 (the PC version is reportedly experiencing bugs and crashes) and respond faster to the game's problems, and Wilson believes that the U.S. government can apply similar...

How Modern Warfare's writer wound up writing Battlefield 4

Jesse Stern, who wrote Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, left his job as a writer and co-executive producer at NCIS and started "actively looking for video game gigs," he told Paul Semel in a recent interview. He met with David Cage and discussed writing for Beyond: Two Souls. While that partnership didn't pan out, it got Stern thinking about the possibility of traveling outside of the U.S. to work on a game. That's when former Infinity Ward president and Respawn Entertainment co-founder Jason West mentioned Stern's name to the developers of Electronic Arts' rival military first-person shooter franchise, Battlefield. "They wanted something that was more linear for Battlefield 4, something more cinematic, and they asked Jason how they had done it with...

DualShock 4 buyers test old games to create compatibility list

With DualShock 4 controllers now appearing on retail shelves, gamers are getting to grips with figuring out which PlayStation 3 games work with the new controller. A Reddit thread has been opened to handle the issue, offering an initial list of games. Users are being invited to add to the list. "I just got my DualShock 4 today, and have noticed some games work, and some don't," wrote thread organizer Lapwner. "So, let's try to create a list so people can see which games work and which games don't. Note that the motion sensing does not work, so even though some games work with the controller, if they are reliant on the motion sensing, then they probably aren't worth playing it with." The current list of compatible games includes: Working Call of Duty (MW2, MW3, Black Ops, Black Ops...

DICE addressing Battlefield 4's high CPU usage, low frame rates and more ahead of launch

DICE plans to address Battlefield 4's low frame rates, high CPU usage and many other issues players reported during its recent beta period, global community manager Vincent Vukovic outlined on the official Battlefield blog. As PC gamers reported problems running Battlefield 4 at an optimal frame rate, DICE rolled out three game client updates and game server updates during the beta to address the issues. According to Vukovic, the updates also served to gather more information about the problems to "ensure a smoother launch." Three patches were also released during the beta to address high CPU usage reported by those using dual, quad and six-core processors. "This was a true beta, and as such all the crash reports that were generated during this period will actually help us make a...

Linux only needs one 'killer' game to explode, says Battlefield director

"We strongly want to get into Linux for a reason," Gustavsson said. "It took Halo for the first Xbox to kick off and go crazy — usually, it takes one killer app or game and then people are more than willing [to adopt it] — it is not hard to get your hands on Linux, for example, it only takes one game that motivates you to go there." "I think, even then, customers are getting more and more convenient, so you really need to convince them how can they marry it into their daily lives and make an integral part of their lives," he explained, sharing that the studio has used Linux servers because it was a "superior operating system to do so." Valve's recently announced Steam OS and Steam Machines are healthy for the console market, Gustavsson said when asked for his opinion on Valve's...

'We should be slapped' for Battlefield 3's unlocks, says DICE creative director

DICE will improve the way unlockables are handled in Battlefield 4, distributing them in a more logical order than in Battlefield 3 and fine-tuning the game's steep learning curve, creative director Lars Gustavsson told VG247. "We shipped Battlefield 3, which we should be slapped for, with probably the worst set ups ever," Gustavsson said. For Battlefield 4, the set-ups will be easier to learn, Gustavsson said, noting that DICE learned from its mistakes with unclear set-ups in the previous Battlefield title. "As a pilot, you had to fly your plane and only kill other planes with your cannons," he said. "You didn't have any counter-measures; you didn't have any missiles. And that's basically for the best of the best pilots; that's what they should do to show their skills. [As a...
