Toys for Bob and the story behind Skylanders

The figurines sit on shelves, hang on walls, tumble on desks in states of unpainted nakedness, dismantled and incoherent. They gurn, snarl and claw in an infinity of static poses. This is the place where the little plastic creatures of Activision's breakout monster hit Skylanders are conceived and birthed, the headquarters of Toys for Bob, a tiki-pirate-ship-themed ex-aircraft hanger in Marin County, California. Since its introduction back in 2011, the Skylanders video game and toy series has generated upwards of $2 billion in lifetime sales. It is one of the top 20 game franchises of all time, with 175 million toy sales. The Skylanders monsters have captured the imaginations of millions of children, by creating a magical illusion. Players place monsters on a plastic tray...

Gaming is helping to keep the PC market alive, PC gaming panel says

During today's computer gaming panel at PAX East 2014, "The (Incredible) Future of PC Gaming," the topic at hand was — as you may have guessed — a contrarian viewpoint to the conventional wisdom that holds that the PC is on the decline. At the same time, it's not as if the panelists, who came from a wide spectrum of the PC gaming industry, were blind to the realities of the market. They just focused on the gaming segment of the platform. Gaming, they said, will keep the PC relevant for the foreseeable future. According to the panelists, there are many positive aspects of the PC platform that are obvious, including how open it is and how customizable it allows games to be. The PC is also in a transition period as a whole, noted Tom Petersen, Nvidia's director of technical marketing...

Meet the people improving video games one line at a time

Every line of dialog the player chooses to speak, every character the player romances, every character the player doesn't romance, every encounter they have, every encounter they don't have — these details are carefully noted so the game can respond to the player's actions accordingly. Players of the Mass Effect series will often refer to their avatar Commander Shepard as "My Shepard," a testament to the care the developers put into making players feel invested in their character. But it takes more than care to pull together an elaborate story that draws players into the game and keeps them there. Video games are often made by teams of writers, designers, programmers, artists and producers, but there's an important role that is often over-looked, forgotten and, in some studios,...

Call of Duty: Ghosts Devastation gameplay trailer confirms Predator DLC

A new trailer for Call of Duty: Ghosts showcases its second multiplayer expansion called Devastation and confirms a guest appearance from the Predator, the trophy hunting Yautja first introduced in 1987 film Predator. Developer Infinity Ward teased the alien's inclusion last week in an Instagram video, which featured a jungle setting, a wrecked helicopter and a purring cloaked opponent. The video also offers players a brief look at the four new multiplayer maps rolling out with Devastation: Behemoth, set in a South American excavation site; Collision exists on a container ship; Ruins; and, Unearthed, a call-back to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's Dome...

Call of Duty PSA asks employers to give young veterans a chance

Activision's philanthropy for veterans, the Call of Duty Endowment, is going to bat for former servicemembers who come home to chronic unemployment and an uphill fight against stereotypes about their time in uniform. Where some veterans go to job interviews in uniform with a sense of confidence it makes them a desirable hire, in many cases some employers can't see past the stripes and the ribbons. "The Honest Truth" encourages them to give returning vets a chance, particularly younger ones, who face unemployment rates many times higher than the rest of the country. The Call of Duty Endowment exists to help veterans find high quality careers by raising awareness among employers of the value veterans bring to a workplace, and by supporting groups that can prepare them to enter the...
