Call of Juarez: Gunslinger review: bullet in the head

Grizzled Greaves is more than just the story's protagonist; he's also its ever-present narrator as he provides a whiskey-fueled account of his greatest hits for an audience of bar patrons. Silas is similar to the equally gruff narrator of Supergiant's Bastion, though a touch less ... reliable. As the disembodied voice of Silas recalls additional details of his story (or is challenged by bar patrons on some of the more outlandish details) he'll often retract or restate certain elements of the tale, causing the structure of the level to rebuild itself before your eyes. Call of Juarez: Gunslinger is presented with some slight cel-shading and some other cool effects, which make the more fantastic elements a lot easier to swallow. In one stage, Greaves' death by falling...

Back catalog, digital drive Ubisoft's better-than-expected sales

Ubisoft reported €76 million (approximately $99.5 million) in sales for the first fiscal quarter ending June 30, which the company said is slightly higher than its initial targets and was bolstered by sales of its back catalog and digital games. Despite overshooting initial estimates of €70 million ($91.6 million), first-quarter sales were down 42.2 percent compared to the same period last fiscal year, which brought in €131 million ($171.5 million) and included the launch of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. The company also saw a 56 percent increase in back catalog game sales and attributed the increase to the "solid performance" of Assassin's Creed 3, Far Cry 3, Just Dance 4, Rocksmith and Rayman Origins. Ubisoft also reported "continued momentum" in the sales of digital...

How Bastion inspired Call of Juarez: Gunslinger

In a video posted by Ubisoft, Call of Juarez series writer and voice director Haris Orkin discusses the development of Call of Juarez: Gunslinger and how its narrative tricks came from classic western traditions. The game's narrative premise — that it was being told by protagonist Silas Greaves, who was prone to exaggerating, revising or flat-out making up details — came as a result of wanting a fully-narrated game like Bastion. "I thought that idea was pretty brilliant," says Orkin, a western history buff, "and that mirrored exactly how the history of the Wild West came to be written in the first place; how the legends became bigger-than-life characters created to entertain the masses." What is and isn't true in Greaves' tales became a major theme in the game. The developers knew...

How traditional game stores can survive the digital revolution

Online multiplayer games, massive hard drives and digital delivery are the watchwords of the new generation of consoles, on display at E3 and launching in 2013. Does this mark the end of your local game store? Not so, according to one of the digital revolution's biggest evangelists, who believes retail stores will still be here right through the entire era of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Chris Early is head of digital publishing at Ubisoft, and previously held a similar role at Microsoft Games. He's tasked with growing the downloadable DLC and digital publishing business. He's pushing games like Call of Juarez: Gunslinger and Blood Dragon through Xbox Live and PSN. But he says buying games in boxes, from a store at the mall, still has a big role to play in the years to come. "I...

The Besties Podcast 59 — Griffin buys a Wii U

I'm genuinely curious what our listeners think about this decision. At first, I was befuddled. It's like when a man buys an expensive umbrella in the middle of a drought. But I've come to see his point. The logic's charming in a really expensive sort of way. What do you think? Would you buy a console to better enjoy a hype train that may or may not arrive at the station? 03:30 - Best unreliable narration in games this year (Call of Juarez: Gunslinger) 14:00 - Best killer app for the Wii U that I purchased over the weekend for some reason (Super Metroid) 23:20 - Half time: E3 hype and a case of the barfs 33:30 - Best mask simulation in video game history (Metro: Last Light) 38:50 - Best use of life's mondernity mundisnus mundanity to build tension in a video game (Metro:...

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger launch trailer discusses the many ways to shoot bad guys in the face

The launch trailer for Techland's downloadable FPS Western Call of Juarez: Gunslinger is all about main character Silas Greaves, his mysterious story and his penchant for shooting people in the face. Call of Juarez: Gunslinger pits the player and Silas against infamous legends of the Wild West like Butch Cassidy and Jesse James, though it calls into question Silas' memory — perhaps he gets details wrong, if he's not making the whole story up as he tells the tale. Silas has a number of face-shooting tools in his ornately carved pistols and rifle, or a shotgun for close-range combat. The trailer also features Silas' abilities, like his Sense of Death that lets him dodge incoming bullets and the Concentration mode that slows down time to pick off enemies. We also get a glimpse at the...

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger musical trailer sings the ballad of Silas Greaves

Ubisoft has released a new trailer for Techland's upcoming western FPS Call of Juarez: Gunslinger telling the story of main character Silas Greaves. In a unique take on the story trailer befitting the Wild West atmosphere, Silas' tale takes the form of a country song about a man who outlaws like Billy the Kid feared. When there was a drought of justice, Silas Greaves made it rain bullets. Call of Juarez: Gunslinger hits Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC on May 22.
