Cave Story developer has two games coming to 3DS

Cave Story developer Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya is having two of his freeware titles brought to the 3DS eShop courtesy of Nicalis, Siliconera reports. Ikachan, a platformer set in an underground, underwater cave where the player assumes the role of a squid was first released as freeware — much in the same way that Cave Story was originally released — in 2000. Guxt, a five-stage vertical shooter, was also released as freeware in 2007. Nicalis is localizing both games for North America and will release them for 3DS on the 3DS eShop in the first quarter of 2013. Ikachan has already been priced and dated and will release on Jan. 31, 2013 for $4.99. Guxt does not have a release date and price yet.

Cave Story creator's Guxt coming to Nintendo 3DS

Guxt, a vertical shoot em' up developed by Cave Story designer Daisuke Amaya, is being ported to Nintendo 3DS by Nicalis, the developer and publisher that is bringing the game to the new platform, the company revealed on its Twitter account. The 3DS port will feature an optional vertical orientation, allowing players to turn the handheld device on its side to maintain the game's original aspect ratio. This follows Nicalis' 2010 release of Cave Story on WiiWare and DSiWare, following the game's initial launch by developer Amaya on PC. Guxt was first released as freeware in 2007. The minimalist, retro-styled shooter features five stages, alongside unloackable score boosts, weapons, and an award for players who end an entire game without dying.

Cave Story might be coming to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, according to ESRB listing

Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya's Cave Story might be getting a release on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, according to an update to the game's ESRB listing discovered by Digital Spy. The game was originally released on PC before being made available on WiiWare, DSiWare and the 3DS eShop. The ESRB listing includes all those platforms and adds the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PS Vita, PSP and Xbox 360. While it is unlikely that the game will receive a PlayStation 2 release, the inclusion of the console may be part of a broader classification for all Sony platforms. The game received a 3DS release earlier this month. No other information about these versions of the game are listed on the ESRB page and the game's publisher, Nicalis, has not made any announcements about it. We have reached out to...

'Cave Story' coming to 3DS eShop on October 4th for $9.99

Cave Story, the indie-darling platformer from game designer Pixel, will be available on the 3DS eShop on October 4th for $9.99, developer Nicalis announced today. It is a separate game from Cave Story 3D, a polygonal 3D remake of the game that launched on the 3DS in November 2011. The eShop version of Cave Story preserves the original 2D sprite artwork, but adds 3D depth to the side-scrolling platformer. It is playable in the original 4:3 aspect ratio or in widescreen, and includes bonus challenge modes such as Boss Rush and Curly Story. In essence, it has the same content as Cave Story+, which came out on Steam last year, but without the updated HD graphics and new soundtrack.

Nicalis cancels U.S. release of 'La-Mulana' due to 'almost non-existent' WiiWare sales

Publisher Nicalis has scrapped plans to release the throwback 2D platformer La-Mulana on the North American and European WiiWare platforms. La-Mulana originally shipped on PCs in 2005 before being picked up by Nicalis and developer Nigoro for a WiiWare port, which launched in Japan last summer. Nicalis has had its ups and downs with the WiiWare platform — it released Cave Story on the service in 2010, but its long-in-development port of NightSky is nowhere to be seen. Now, a statement from Nicalis founder Tyrone Rodriguez makes it sound like the company's done with WiiWare for good. "The WiiWare market has a fraction of the players from 2008," Rodriguez told GoNintendo. "The window for release and success of software on the platform ended in 2009 and took a very steep decline. Players...
