City of Titans Kickstarter ends with more than double its goal

Missing Worlds Media's Kickstarter campaign for City of Titans, which the studio calls a spiritual successor to the defunct MMO City of Heroes, closed successfully yesterday with $678,189. The total, which came from just over 5,000 backers over the course of a 33-day funding drive, was more than twice Missing Worlds Media's original goal of $300,000. The final tally surpassed seven of the studio's stretch goals, including a Mac version of the game. Missing Worlds Media is a community-based studio that grew "out of the community that was left behind when City of Heroes closed," technical director Nate Downes told Polygon in an interview this past July. The company plans to launch City of Titans in November 2015.

City of Titans surpasses Kickstarter goal with 27 days remaining

City of Titans, Missing Worlds Media's open-world superhero successor to City of Heroes seeking funding on Kickstarter, surpassed its funding goal with 27 days remaining in the crowdfunding campaign. As of this writing, the Kickstarter campaign for the massively multiplayer online role-playing game has received $330,650 from 2,238 backers. Its original goal was $320,000. Though the developers haven't outlined a series of stretch goals, they wrote about potential stretch goals in their Kickstarter pitch. "If we go beyond that with stretch goals? Additional middleware to help us make the game," the City of Titans Kickstarter page reads. "Purchasing of assets, saving our team the time needed to develop. Licensing premade systems from other game developers. There is a world of options...

City of Titans Kickstarter launches for City of Heroes successor

Missing Worlds Media launched a Kickstarter campaign for City of Titans today, a successor to the defunct massively multiplayer online role-playing game City of Heroes. City of Heroes developer Paragon Studios shuttered last year, ending the superhero-infused MMORPG. A group of programmer-players assembled in the wake of the shutdown to create City of Titans. "Our goal is to deliver a unique massively multiplayer online roleplaying game, created from the community of a lost universe, to build a new community for a new world," the Kickstarter description reads. "A brave new world containing a wealth of player choices, from costumes to powers, it continues the traditions found in its spiritual predecessor, daring to reach for new innovations no other game will touch, while standing...

City of Heroes successor built on blood, sweat and Kickstarter

Last fall, Paragon Studios closed its doors and shut down City of Heroes due to a "realignment of company focus and publishing support" at parent company NCSoft. Players continued to support the MMO and its developers through its final days, and Paragon Studios made a bid to purchase the game outright from NCSoft in a last effort to save it. But in the new year, a new hope arose: a group of programmers, designers and City of Heroes fans announced a new community-based studio, Missing Worlds Media. Missing Worlds, they said, would create the spiritual successor to the game they had lost, one that would capture the spirit and feel of City of Heroes. On Sept. 8, Missing Worlds will launch a Kickstarter campaign to raise funding for The Phoenix Project, its answer to the woe City of...

City of Heroes developers fought to the end to save MMO

City of Heroes developer Paragon Studios fought until the bitter end to save the MMO from shutting down last year, including attempting to buy the title from publisher NCsoft, former lead designer Matt Miller told Gamasutra. The studio initially attempted to broker a deal to find a new publisher for the MMO; however, while the developer was in talks with a potential buyer, nothing came of it. A group of 20 Paragon staff then began talks regarding buying out the game directly from NCsoft to keep it from closing. In addition, Paragon was interested in acquiring two other unnamed NCsoft-owned projects. Unfortunately, NCsoft sent word the game would shut at the end of 2012. To thank players for their time, Miller hoped to give players a final mission that had them fighting off an alien...

The Phoenix Project is a spiritual successor to City of Heroes

A community-based game studio called Missing Worlds Media is attempting to build and create a spiritual successor to the late superhero massively multiplayer online game City of Heroes through The Phoenix Project. Comprised of programmers, designers, project managers and fans, The Phoenix Project hopes to recreate the spirit, feel and concepts City of Heroes players were so familiar with. As to how much of a spiritual successor the game is depends on the players; the project's website mentions that there "are some legal constraints" on what the team can build. Missing Worlds released a brief teaser trailer, which you can view above, outlining the project's mission and early concept art. Paragon Studios closed its doors in fall of 2012, bringing an unwelcome end to City of Heroes....

City of Heroes publisher NCsoft dashes hopes of saving game or developer

City of Heroes won't be getting a last-minute reprieve from being shut down, according to publisher NCsoft, who says it "exhausted all options" but wasn't able to save the game or its developer, Paragon Studios. In an open letter posted yesterday, NCsoft acknowledged the "overwhelmingly constructive and positive messages" it and Paragon have received from fans, including emails, packages, and an online petition with over 20,000 signatures. The publisher said that choosing to close Paragon and shut down the game "has not been an easy decision." NCsoft explained that it explored selling the studio as well as the rights to the City of Heroes intellectual property, but "in the end, efforts to do so were not successful." The company concluded by noting that Paragon will be holding in-game s...

‘City of Heroes’ players buy farewell dinner for developers

In light of Paragon Studios closing its doors, effectively putting an end to the massively multiplayer online game City of Heroes, fans raised money to buy the team dinner. In just three hours, the community pooled together $1,000. User and fundraising organizer TonyV had heard of a restaurant the team frequented and rallied the community into donating. "We want to express our gratitude for building the world in which our imaginations have lived," TonyV wrote in the fundraising forum post. "They've provided an unprecedented level of support and interactivity over the years. They've talked to use, listened to our feedback, even socialized with us, all while providing a game that has an incredible level of innovation and fun." According to Massively, fans are also working on in-game...
