Zynga is canceling CityVille 2, Party Place and The Friend Game

Mobile games developer Zynga is canceling CityVille 2, The Friend Game and Party Place, COO David Ko announced today during the company's quarterly earnings call. According to Ko, the games, all launched last fall, will be canceled because they did not meet the company's expectations. CityVille 2, the sequel to Zynga's 2010 city-building simulator, went into closed beta last October, just one month after the launch of Farmville 2. CityVille 2 launched publicly on Facebook on Nov. 1 as a free-to-play title with additional content available for purchase, but quickly lost active users in the following months. When asked if the success of FarmVille 2 "cannibalized" the audience for CityVille 2, Ko said that Zynga is still learning from its game launches. The company plans to launch fewer...

Zynga CEO among the worst of 2012, according to Businessweek

Zynga CEO Mark Pincus is among the worst CEOs of 2012, according to an article in Businessweek based on selections from Sydney Finkelstein, a Dartmouth College professor. Finkelstein, who teaches at the Tuck School of Business, cites the social gaming studio's 75 percent stock drop and the recent flight of employees as the kind of "rookie mistakes" that Pincus made. CEOs of Best Buy, Avon and Chesapeake Energy join Pincus on the worst of list. The FarmVille developer's troubles have surfaced several times in 2012. In July, a group of law firms began an investigation into allegations that executives sold Zynga stock before it plummeted 40 percent. In August, COO John Schappert resigned and Electronic Arts filed suit against Zynga for copyright infringement. The next month, Zynga c...

Zynga's vice president of business development, Jonathan Flesher, has left the social game company after three and a half years, All Things D reports. Flesher, whose last day was Nov. 9 and who worked on a number of partnership deals for Zynga including Yahoo, Google+, MSN and AOL, joins a growing list of execs departing the company. In recent weeks the company lost its chief financial officer and treasurer, and over the past few months the studio lost its chief operating officer, chief creative officer, chief technical officer of infrastructure and execs who helped run Zynga subsidiaries OMGPOP and Zynga With Friends. The news of Flesher's departure also comes just days after reports of Zynga's CEO Mark Pincus feeling "discouraged" by the company's recent downturn. Zynga recently...

Zynga games Treasure Isle and FishVille will be the first of 13 games to be shut down, according to announcements made on their respective Facebook pages. Social games are here to stay says King.com CEO

Social games have a promising future ahead of them despite one of the industry's biggest players, Zynga, experiencing financial losses, King.com CEO Riccardo Zacconi tells Polygon. With Zynga's third quarterly earnings report suggesting that players might be losing interest in social games, Zacconi says this is far from the case. "The reality is that there are one billion users on Facebook and 230 million of those people are playing games," he says. "I think for these reasons it's the largest game platform at the moment. It's huge. It's a platform that is perfect for reaching players." Zacconi says that what the industry is seeing is more developers entering the social games space and players diversifying. Where players once only played Zynga games, they now have more options and are...

Taking a chance on CityVille 2

All eyes are on Zynga. For months the social game developer has been under intense scrutiny from the media and gamers for all kinds of reasons: accusations of copyright infringement, a lawsuit from EA, falling share prices and the recent announcement of staff layoffs. To outsiders, the developer's future is unclear. What is clear is many people are watching Zynga, waiting to see what it does next. The answer, it seems, is CityVille 2. "I'm actually very excited to be releasing CityVille 2 in this specific climate," the game's general manager, Tim Train tells Polygon. "I think the reports of our death have been greatly exaggerated and FarmVille 2 and CityVille 2 represent the next wave of innovative and fun Zynga products. "With the current success of FarmVille 2 [which is now the...

Kixeye CEO slams Zynga as corporate theft lawsuit moves forward

Kixeye chief executive Will Harbin lashed out at social-gaming rival Zynga yesterday, as a San Francisco judge granted the latter company's request to continue with its lawsuit against a former employee who took confidential documents with him when he left Zynga for Kixeye in August, reports All Things D. A Kixeye spokesperson previously said the company "has nothing to do with the suit," but Harbin released a statement yesterday accusing Zynga of resorting to litigation as senior staffers continue to leave and its share price keeps dropping. He also said his company would have no interest in using information about Zynga games to copy them, since Kixeye makes different kinds of social games. Here's Harbin's full statement: Zynga is burning to the ground and bleeding top talent and...
