7 CommentsCommand & Conquer makes a strategic move into the free-to-play fight
By Michael McWhertor on Feb 25, 2013 02.25.13
The next entry in EA's real-time strategy game, Command & Conquer, is a bold enough step to warrant its back-to-basics naming. Originally a follow-up to 2003 game Command & Conquer: Generals, EA's forthcoming PC strategy game is being pitched less like a sequel and more like a evolving live service where we might play future C&C games. It's a free-to-play game, and freed of narrative connections to the long-running Red Alert and Tiberian fiction. There are no plans for cinematic cut scenes of the B movie-quality Command & Conquer was known for in the '90s. At launch, Command & Conquer won't feature a single-player campaign, but it will include single-player content. Command & Conquer's creators say they want to focus on "the heritage" of the series, iterating on the core gameplay of...

0 CommentsSportsfriends developers' love of split-screen gaming influenced their collaboration
By Dave Tach on Dec 07, 2012 12.07.12
In an Ask Me Anything on Reddit today, the four indie developers behind games like QWOP and the Sportsfriends Kickstarter project discussed their shared love of local multiplayer and how that influenced their not-yet-funded collaboration. "The thought process was along the lines of: we each really care about each other's games, but we are not sure what's the best way to release them," Ramiro Corbetta, developer of Hokra, wrote. "What if we get together and do a compilation around this idea of local multiplayer games that we really care about? Yeah, good idea, let's do it! In terms of innovation, it's hard to argue against [Johann Sebastian] Joust. I mean, it won the Game Developers Choice Innovation award, beating out Portal 2 and LA Noire ... fancy stuff!" Doug Wilson, developer of...

By Tracey Lien on Aug 21, 2012 08.21.12
Command & Conquer: Generals 2 will ditch single-player mode in favor of co-operative and competitive play, according to BioWare Victory's general manager, John Van Caneghem. Speaking to PC Gamer, Caneghem confirmed that Generals 2 will ship without a single-player mode and focus on co-operative and competitive skirmishes instead. Carneghem said that the studio "really want[s] to get back to the roots of what made Command and Conquer great". The game will be a dedicated online experience and the development team will add additional modes based on player feedback. "As a live service I think the exciting part is you can try things," he said. "You can see what the community wants, you can give it a shot, you can put it up for a weekend and see how it goes, develop towards what the fans...

Details about Steam's rumored Summer Sale, which may include 11 days of indie game bundles, may have been uncovered through Valve's Steamworks registry. According to entries retrieved from Steamworks' registry, each indie bundle seems to contain at least five games, including titles like Braid (day three), QUBE (day seven), and VVVVVV (day 10). Recently updated registry listings also include publisher-based bundles for Square, Bethesda, and THQ and franchise-based bundles for Bioshock, Sniper Elite, and Command and Conquer. Open Steamworks, a web-based implementation of Valve's Steamworks API, allows a users to search the Steamworks database. A search with the keyword "summer" returns a long list of summer bundles going back to at least 2010. Several recent additions to the...
