Company of Heroes migrating to Steamworks May 7, original servers shutting down

Company of Heroes will migrate to Valve's Steamworks service on May 7, as the original servers hosted by middleware company Quazal will be shut down, developer Relic Entertainment announced today on the game's forums. Players are advised to switch over to the new Steamworks version before the migration, as all previously existing versions of the game will cease working. The Steam build is available for download now, and those who already own Company of Heroes on Steam should have a new downloadable entry in their library titled "Company of Heroes (New Steam Version)." This includes the core game plus both downloadable expansion packs. Those who did not purchase Company of Heroes through Steam can use their game's CD-Key to obtain a downloadable version through the "Activate a Product...

Full Indie Summit to feature Mass Effect and Mark of the Ninja devs on April 10

The Full Indie Summit, a new game developers conference set to take place in Vancouver, Canada, is scheduled to run April 20 on a shoestring budget. In response to GDC Canada, a game developers conference that took place in the Canadian city several years ago but failed to be successful enough to continue operation, The Full Indie Summit is a not-for-profit event designed to avoid the traditional overhead costs of running large conferences. Tickets — which can be purchased here — are available for $10. This will be put toward costs of a 400-seat venue, as well as to food and beverages for attendees. In addition to developers from Nintendo and Sony who will describe the process of getting games onto consoles, speakers will include: Nels Anderson (Klei) - Mark of the Ninja,...

Company of Heroes adding Steamworks support to retain online features

The original Company of Heroes, Relic Entertainment's World War II strategy game, will be updated to include Steamworks support in order to maintain certain online gameplay features that were in danger of being lost, according to producer Greg Wilson. In a community letter posted by COH2.org, Wilson explained that the online infrastructure for Company of Heroes would soon be disrupted by a shutdown of the Quazal middleware. Fortunately for fans of the 2006 PC real-time strategy game, with the help of developer Smoking Gun Interactive and Relic's new owner Sega, a port of Company of Heroes to Steamworks will help retain "as many of the original online features working on the new platform as possible." Those features include things like leaderboards, server side matchmaking and game...

Humble THQ Bundle pulls in $5 million in sales, president kicks in an extra $10,000

THQ's Humble Bundle efforts have come to a close with more than $5 million in sales, with an extra $10,000 of that coming from recently appointed president Jason Rubin who reclaimed his position at the top of the contributor list today. More than 885,000 game bundles were sold through the Humble THQ Bundle, pulling in $5,097,261.48. That money doesn't all go directly to THQ, as contributors had the option to offer a cut of their contribution to the American Red Cross, the Child's Play charity and to the Humble Bundle organization itself. The average price paid per bundle ended at $5.76. The Humble Bundle effort kicked off on Nov. 29, letting contributors pay what they wanted for six PC games published by THQ: Darksiders, Metro 2033, Red Faction: Armageddon, Company of Heroes, C...

Company of Heroes developer Relic has not given up on free-to-play

Company of Heroes developer Relic Entertainment is still interested in experimenting with free-to-play business models for its long-running RTS series despite its troubles with free-to-play title Company of Heroes Online, game director Quinn Duffy told RPS. Duffy described the free-to-play model as being part of publisher THQ's "vision going forward" as well as the vision of the studio. Describing the challenges faced throughout the ongoing development of 2010's real-time strategy MMO Company of Heroes Online, he explained timing and a small team were both factors. "To a degree, it was timing," he said. "There's a real challenge in building a studio to create games for that infrastructure. We had a small team working on it, but a lot of live support. There was new content on an almost...

The Humble THQ Bundle includes Windows PC Steam codes for Darksiders, Metro 2033, Red Faction Armageddon, Company of Heroes, Company of Heroes: Opening Fronts, Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor and five game soundtracks for a pay-what-you-want price.
