Ubisoft is beginning a major expansion of its digital distribution presence today: The company is now selling games from other studios and publishers through the Uplay Shop, its online store, and has also begun selling its own games through Electronic Arts' competing service, Origin. Chris Early, Ubisoft's vice president of digital publishing, told Polygon in a recent phone interview that the simultaneous moves are being made with one principal goal: to give Uplay's 50 million users more options for buying and playing Ubisoft games. Paradox Interactive CEO Frederik Wester acknowledged that his company has launched buggy, unfinished or nearly unplayable games in the past, and promised better quality control in the future, in an interview with GameSpy. The trend of substandard launches will end with 2012's Gettysburg: Armored Warfare, said Wester. That alternate-history shooter, which was developed by Radioactive Software and published by Paradox, launched in March to a poor reception: Reviewers slammed the game for being broken. "That was terrible. We did not do our homework," said Wester. He added that Paradox "learned a lot from that release" — the publisher canceled four games over the summer, after the bungled launch of Gettysburg, because they weren't up to par. The next DLC installment for complex strategy game Crusader Kings 2, called The Republic, launches today at 3 p.m. CET, developer Paradox Interactive announced. The Republic will focus on the medieval mercantile republics of the game, allowing users to play as the head of a Patrician family in one of the great merchant republics. Players can lobby to become Doge, invest money in campaign coffers to make up for their family's lack of prestige and attempt to control the seas as they expand their trading empire. Crusader Kings 2's latest Aztec-inspired DLC offering, Sunset Invasion, is now available for $4.99 from the game's official website, Paradox Interactive announced. The new downloadable content combines fantasy and history by pitting European dynasties against an invading Aztec civilization that arrives at a random point mid-to-late in the game. The invading army brings with it new diseases from across the ocean, Aztec religion and human sacrifice.
