Crysis 3 review: one small step

Crysis 3 starts a couple of decades after the conclusion of the last game. New York City remains in ruins after a cybernetic super-soldier known as Prophet thwarted an invasion from below by the alien Ceph. Outfitted with a combination of alien DNA and human technology known as the Nanosuit, Prophet sacrificed his own body and an unknown amount of his humanity to get the job done, and now he's imprisoned and set to be dissected by the Cell corporation for his trouble. As Crysis 3 opens, Prophet is rescued by an old friend with a plan: to breach the remains of New York and unravel a conspiracy involving a new energy economy and the ghosts of the ill-fated Ceph invasion force. The urban environments of Crysis 2's New York have been overgrown by rampant vegetation, turning the...

Graphics make up 60 percent of a game, says Crytek CEO

A video game's visuals not only help drive gameplay, but are "60 percent of the game," Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli told X360 magazine during a recent interview. Yerli said that people will say that graphics aren't important, but urges people to "play Crysis and tell me they don't matter." "It's always been about graphics driving gameplay," Yerli said. "In Crysis 3 it's the grass and the vegetation, the way the physics runs the grass interact and sways them in the wind. The better the graphics, the better the physics, the better the sound design, the better the technical assets and production values are-paired with the art direction, making things look spectacular and stylistic is 60 percent of the game." Crysis 3 launched Feb. 19 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC.

Japan Review Check: God of War, Crysis, Super Robot Taisen

A quick look at the highlights among the games coming out in Japan this coming week, courtesy the review pages of Famitsu magazine: - Crysis 3 (9/9/8/9, 35 out of 40 points): "The beautiful graphics and 'you are there'-ness are amazing," wrote Famitsu editor Atsuhiro Fujiwara. "The presence of the nanosuit gives you this great feeling of being some kind of super soldier, but you aren't just blindly shooting your way through; you also have stealth and a lot of other tactics at your disposal. Multiplayer's also laden with modes and maps, making for a reliably fun experience." "The visuals and animation are particularly excellent," added Urara Honma. "The campaign gets you into the world nice and easy, making this remarkably accessible even though it's the third game of a trilogy. The...

Crysis 3 was 'very close' to Wii U launch, Crytek CEO says

Crysis 3 was running on the Wii U and could have launched on the system, but "had to die" due to a lack of support on the business side, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli told GamesBeat. In January, Yerli told Digital Spy that Crysis 3 would not come to Wii U because there wasn't enough "business drive," but did not mention that the game was already running on the console. Speaking with GamesBeat, Yerli offered a somewhat similar answer. "We were very close to launching it," Yerli told GamesBeat. "But there was a lack of business support between Nintendo and EA on that. Since we as a company couldn't launch on the Wii U ourselves — we don't have a publishing license — Crysis 3 on Wii U had to die." Crysis 3 launched for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC Feb. 19. Read our review here.

Crysis 3 won't come to Wii U due to lack of 'business drive,' says Crytek CEO

Crysis 3 will not be coming to Wii U consoles as there is not enough "business drive" to make a port worthwhile, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli told Digital Spy. The decision was made official by EA and Nintendo, says Yerli, in what he describes as "a purely business decision." "There has been discussions between Nintendo and EA and Crytek, but the bottom line is that there is that there's not enough business drive in it," he explained. "It's a purely business decision. I'd love to see it on Wii U, but what I love to see and what gets done at the end of the day are two different things. Even so, I could initiate it but someone has to sell it, right?" Last year, Yerli announced a Wii U title was in development using CryEngine 3; However, it was confirmed the unspecified game would not be...

Crytek may expand Crysis series beyond first-person shooters

The next installment in the Crysis franchise may not be a first-person shooter, according to an interview with producer Michael Elliot Read published on Dusty Cartridge. "Crysis was always intended to be a trilogy and I think that over that time we've built a really cool universe," Read said. "We haven't really gone in and said 'Hey let's put Nano suits and clown suits and stuff and completely violate and sell our IP.' We've done a fairly good job at maintaining that, so I think in terms of the universe, we have a lot more life left in that to go back and try some unique stuff. Whether it's FPS or not I have no idea, but there's definitely a future in the franchise." Read's comments echo those of Crytek's co-founder, Cevat Yerli, who said last year that the successor to Crysis 3 will...
