115 CommentsHigher calling: The new gospel of Christian games
By Patrick Stafford on Dec 20, 2012 12.20.12
Christian Games Developers Conference Christian Games Developers' Conference Tim Emmerich More than 100 developers gather every year at the Christian Games Developers Conference to discuss how they can make their games better. It's a diverse group, representing five continents in the conference's best year. It's a serious affair. They have volunteers, plenty of discussion. Even matching t-shirts. The conference was founded in 2002 by Tim Emmerich, a soft-spoken engineer who works at HP to pay the bills. He wanted to improve what he thought was a lack of support and experimentation in the Christian games community. "My expectations have been really blown away by the conference," Emmerich says. "I was just expecting 12 in the first year, and we got 30. Now we're...

5 CommentsBatman: Arkham City board game adaptation coming in 2013
By Michael McWhertor on Nov 28, 2012 11.28.12
Rocksteady's action game Batman: Arkham City is being adapted for tabletops by Cryptozoic Entertainment, maker of card-based and board games based on The Walking Dead and World of Warcraft. Cryptozoic's upcoming board game, Batman: Arkham City Escape, is pitched as a two-player game that pits Batman against the rogues gallery of Arkham City. Batman: Arkham City Escape will give one player control of Batman and a second control of twenty of Batman's enemies in card-based battles of combat and strategy, Cryptozoic says, as the Dark Knight attempts to stop villains from escaping Arkham. The board game is due in early 2013 and features an 18" by 33" game board, an 11" by 18" Utility Belt board, eight custom dice, two 40-card decks — one for Batman, one for the villains of Arkham City...

‘Dishonored’ axed ‘Thief’ shadow stealth mechanic to be more realistic
By Megan Farokhmanesh on Sep 29, 2012 09.29.12
Dishonored's Thief-like stealth system previously had players scurrying around in the dark, but the mechanic was killed in favor of realism, reports Eurogamer. Lead level designer Christophe Carrier spoke with Eurogamer on the necessity of lighting and why the mechanic doesn't fit. "In Thief the light is very important," said Carrier. "At the beginning we tried to be in the same mood: use the light, use the shadows." "But we realized that when you're standing in front of an NPC like this [hand in front of face] it's not realistic—we must admit that. In the real world it's not like this." "As we are a bit perfectionist, we wanted it to work as in Thief and very realistically. With these two notions we got crazy and decided to eliminate the light parameters, because it was too...
'The Secret World' discounted 50 percent this weekend
By Griffin McElroy on Sep 28, 2012 09.28.12
The Secret World is on sale for $24.99, a 50 percent discount from its standard price, on developer Funcom's official site through the weekend, the company revealed today. The dark, alternate-reality MMORPG had a rocky start following its late summer launch, with a large part of the development team being laid off and Funcom's former CEO investigated for insider trading. However, the game has become a "profitable operation," according to new CEO Ole Schreiner, and has been the subject of three fairly substantial, totally free content updates. Folks who are hesitant to pull the trigger despite the halved price point can enlist in a free, three-day trial to see if it's their cup of tea.

By Alexa Ray Corriea on Sep 28, 2012 09.28.12

Transfers can be completed by logging into the Account Management section and selecting "Free Character Migration" at the bottom of players' World of Warcraft license.
