Darksiders 2 review: into the light

Darksiders 2 signals a shift for developer Vigil Studios. For all its strengths - lengthy, captivating dungeons and a brutal hack-and-slash combat system with enough depth to set it above its competition - 2010's Darksidersdemonstrated the insecurity of a fledgling team's first release. Vigil proved capable of emulating mechanics borrowed from other games, but the full experience didn't gel into something remarkable. Rather than follow up Darksiders with a rehash with new dungeons, Vigil has reimagined its very core, building in significant new RPG and platforming mechanics. With those additions, Darksiders 2 seems destined to be a studio-defining title. The influence of The Legend of Zeldaand God of War can still be felt, but the changes in Darksiders 2 demonstrate a new sense of...

Darksiders could be headed to Linux (update)

Darksiders could be on its way to Linux, if an image posted to the series' official Facebook page today is any indication. The screenshot below, which includes the words "Darksiders Linux" in the title bar, was posted alongside a comment that reads, "From our labs!" Developed at Vigil Games, Darksiders was released in 2010 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC. It's currently available for $19.99 on Steam. THQ, the game's original publisher, declared bankruptcy in December 2012, and Nordic Games acquired the Darksiders franchise and more in April 2013. Earlier this year, Nordic brought Darksiders 2 back to the European Wii U eShop. "The reason to bring it back is that we love Darksiders and some of us are also big fans of Nintendo and their games," business and product...

THQ's abandoned office is a ghost town full of video game relics

When THQ declared bankruptcy and dissolved, it abandoned its office, leaving boxes, games, marketing materials and more behind, according to a gallery created by Reddit user Soulessgingr.  The Redditor works for a company that moved into THQ's former headquarters. According to Soulessgingr, the THQ office includes abandoned hardware like cables, monitors, routers and TVs. "It seems the building owner paid THQ for all the stuff they left," Soulessgingr wrote.  But more important to video game fans, the office is also littered with video game awards, boxes and promotional materials for former THQ games like South Park: The Stick of Truth, which found new life at Ubisoft,  Saints Row the Third: Enter the Dominatrix, a planned standalone expansion that was eventually incorporated into S...

Nordic 'watching the Wii U situation,' brings Darksiders 2 back to EU eShop

Austrian publisher Nordic Games is making another move with its properties purchased during THQ liquidation auction: the company returned Darksiders 2 to the Wii U eShop in Europe today as it continues to monitor what business and product development director Reinhard Pollice calls "the Wii U situation." Pollice told Polygon this morning that Darksiders 2 was pulled from the European Wii U eShop last March prior to Nordic's purchase of the IP. The popular action role-playing hack-and-slash title is still available on the North American eShop. Global manager of PR Philipp Brock added that Nordic does not know why Darksiders 2 was removed from the eShop in the first place. "The reason to bring it back is that we love Darksiders and some of us are also big fans of Nintendo and their...
