25 CommentsThe future of Darksiders, Red Faction and THQ's other IP at Nordic Games
By Brian Crecente on Apr 23, 2013 04.23.13
"I've seen bad experiences with trying to handle creative people," said Wingefors, self-described entrepreneur and owner of Nordic Games Group and Wingefors Invest. "So we don't have any internal developers and I don't intend to." Typically that wouldn't be a problem for a game distributor, but as of yesterday afternoon unofficially, and next month officially, Wingefors' Nordic Games will be the owner of more than 150 individual titles, rights to titles and video game franchises, each the beloved orphan of THQ's steady disintegration. It will be up to Wingefors and his business team in Austria to decide what to do with the likes of MX Vs. ATV, Darksiders, Red Faction, Deadly Creatures, Destroy All Humans, Supreme Commander, Titan Quest, and the list goes on and on. Does he plan to...

18 CommentsCrytek USA Corp. CEO announces intention to buy Darksiders IP
By Jenna Pitcher on Mar 28, 2013 03.28.13
Ex-Vigil personnel now residing at Crytek intend to make a bid on the Darksiders intellectual property because it belongs with its creators, according to a tweet by Crytek USA Corp. David Adams. "Going to bid on Darksiders IP," Adams wrote. "Put 7 years of heart and soul into that franchise, and I think it belongs at home with its creators." Vigil Games closed in January this year when THQ didn't find a buyer for the studio. Adams, Vigil's co-founder, went on to found a new studio in Austin, Texas under the Crytek umbrella. The new studio was founded within two weeks of Vigil's shuttering and the studio consists of 35 former Vigil Games employees. Adams followed up the first tweet with another, largely stating the same thing but with the addition of PS3 and Xbox 360 hashtags. D...

27 CommentsA shaky start to 2013 could be good for the games industry
By Brian Crecente on Feb 04, 2013 02.04.13
Last month saw the disintegration of a major publisher, the shuttering of a Disney-backed studio, the once flush Nintendo facing massive losses, a slew of other developers teetering on the brink of disaster and a rekindling of concerns that video games corrupt youth. But January wasn't all bad news. It also saw the rise of the "micro-console" and the creation of new studios by a new breed of free-to-play game makers. Viewed holistically, the beginning of 2013 wasn't a month of bad or good, simply a month of change. "January is evidence that there has been a shift in the industry," said Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter. "January is showing a lot of cracks in the industry. The industry has changed and now people are having to adapt to the change." Publisher THQ's months-long...

36 CommentsPlatinum Games boss expresses interest in buying Darksiders on Twitter
By Tracey Lien on Jan 23, 2013 01.23.13
The executive director and producer of Platinum Games, Atsushi Inaba, tweeted his interest in buying THQ's Darksiders today after learning that no one made a bid for the franchise during THQ's auction today. In a tweet he wrote today, the boss of the studio behind Bayonetta, Vanquish and the upcoming Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance said (in Japanese): "Oh man in THQ's big sale it looks like nobody's bought Darksiders ... I'd love to buy that (if it was cheap)." In today's sale of THQ assets, Vigil Games and its properties failed to find a buyer, resulting in Vigil employees losing their jobs and the fate of the studio remaining as part of THQ's Chapter 11 bankruptcy case. A Vigil Games employee wrote a goodbye letter posted to the NeoGaf forum. T...

By Dave Tach on Jan 23, 2013 01.23.13
The assets for Vigil Games, developers of the Darksiders series, were not sold at auction today and Vigil employees jobs have ended as the studio's fate remains part of THQ's Chapter 11 bankruptcy case, according to a letter from THQ CEO Brian Farrell. "Some assets, including our publishing businesses and Vigil, along with some other intellectual properties are not included in the sale agreements," Farrell wrote in a letter to all THQ employees provided to Polygon by a former employee. "They will remain part of the Chapter 11 case. We will make every effort to find appropriate buyers, if possible." Farrell sent the letter today as an auction took place in which THQ's games were sold title by title, but Vigil and its assets apparently failed to find a purchaser. "If you are an...
