Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley told GamerHubTV that he "can't wait to see" EverQuest Next on PlayStation 4, perhaps teasing that the upcoming Mac and Windows PC massively massively multiplayer online role-playing game could be headed to Sony's next-gen console. "We haven't announced technically that we're putting it on the PlayStation 4, but it's fair to say that we're a Sony company, so I say that with a smile on my face," Smedley said. "Can't wait to see it on PS4." EverQuest Next wouldn't be SOE's first MMO to make its way to the PS4. DC Universe Online was released for the console at launch last week, while PlanetSide 2 is slated for an early 2014 release on PS4. Massively multiplayer online games are currently in a state of flux when it comes to next-gen, thanks to the free-to-play market and players wanting new experiences, DC Universe Online creative director Jens Andersen told Polygon today. We spoke with Andersen about the future of MMOs during Sony's launch event taking place in New York City. According to Andersen, the genre is currently undergoing "a huge metamorphosis." "I think people are tired of that old MMO," Andersen said. "[World of Warcraft] has a lock on that; good for them. That's why products like [DC Universe Online] and EverQuest Next are moving into a new direction for what players want out of these types of games." MMOs are an important part of the gaming scene because they're about community, Andersen said. That...

DC Universe Online players who have accounts on the PlayStation 3 will be able to play the game with PlayStation 4 account holders when the MMO launches on Sony's next-gen console, according to senior creative director Jens Andersen in an interview with Games Beat. When the PlayStation 4 launches, those who are currently playing DC Universe Online on the PS3 will be able to transfer their existing account to the PS4. According to Andersen, "everything transfers when you log into your account on the new console." PS3 and PS4 players will share servers, which means they will be able to play together, even though they're using different consoles. "People won't have to make the tough choice to keep their PS3 plugged in just to keep playing DC Universe Online," Andersen said. Sony Online...

A new update for DC Universe Online, Sony Online Entertainment's comic book-themed massively multiplayer online game, will prepare the game for its PlayStation 4 launch, executive producer Larry Liberty announced today via blog post. The PlayStation 4 version of the game is expected within the console's launch window this holiday. Update 31 will improve DC Universe Online "for all players, on all platforms," Liberty wrote in a post on the game's website. The game will undergo a graphical overhaul, in addition to improvements to its leveling system. "New content presents itself naturally as you level, and there is less chance of getting lost or stuck without a mission," Liberty wrote. "You'll also notice that enemies are fighting and acting in more consistent ways throughout the game. ...
