Dead Island Riptide review: a weak current

Really, what you'll be doing is killing a whole lot of zombies. Xian Mei (knife lady), Sam B (rap guy who's good with blunts [GET IT?]), Logan Carter (dude who's good at throwing stuff because football) and Purna (firearms expert) have found themselves on another island full of zombies for reasons far too disparate and silly to list here. Have you seen the second Jurassic Park movie? Consider Riptide's Palanai Island our stand-in for Isla Sorna — it exists solely as a conceit to create a recognizable sequel. These survivors (bonded by their shared immunity to zombitis) are joined by a new addition. John Morgan is a hand-to-hand combat expert, who, much like an in utero Justin McElroy, is able to kick very hard. After choosing a character, you'll once again lead the...

Repackaged versions of a few 2013 titles including Saints Row 4 and Dead Island: Riptide are on their way to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, if listings on some Amazon sites in Europe are accurate, Official Xbox Magazine U.K. reports. Amazon Germany lists a Game of the Century Edition for Saints Row 4 on PS3 and Xbox 360. The package includes more than 20 downloadable add-ons, and according to Amazon, it will cost €29.99 and be available May 9. GTA 5 and Dead Island's bloody torso called out for sexism

Grand Theft Auto 5 and Dead Island: Riptide's bloody torso statue were among the ways the media "failed women in 2013," according to a video created by The Representation Group and titled How the Media Failed Women in 2013. The video has been picked up by media outlets like Time Magazine and serves as a lowlight reel of the year. It juxtaposes the achievements and breakthroughs made in 2013, such as women making it onto the list of Time's most influential people, with instances of sexism in commercials, music videos, video games and on the news. Almost halfway through the video, a scene from Grand Theft Auto 5 and a news item about Dead Island: Riptide's bloody torso statue make an appearance, making the statement that some video games — like many other forms of media — are...

Japan Review Check: Yokai Watch, New Super Luigi U

Here's a quick recap of the most important console games coming out next week in Japan, as seen in Famitsu magazine's review pages. Nintendo released a Mario game (sort of) and it's not the top-rated game of the week! - Yokai Watch (9/9/9/9, 36 out of 40 points): This is Level-5's latest attempt to create a big-name kids' franchise in Japan alongside Layton and Inazuma Eleven. A manga's already underway, an anime series coming soon, and if Famitsu is any indication, the 3DS game - a sort of Pokemon which focuses more on story than battle - is more than worthy of supporting all this. "The game gradually expands its feature set as you go, opening up this very unique world that's easy to melt into," wrote reviewer Reona Ebihara. "The 3D visuals work great, serving especially well to put...

Dead Island: Riptide Steam codes at U.K. retail unlock Dark Souls instead

Some Steam users in the U.K. attempting to redeem codes for Dead Island: Riptide have instead unlocked Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition, according to posts on the Steam forums. A group of players who purchased the codes at retail found they had access to Namco Bandai's game rather than the sequel to Deep Silver's 2011 zombie-slashing action title. Deep Silver community manager Maurice Tan took to the forums to explain the situation, stating the code mix-up affected retail copies of Riptide in the U.K. and Nordic regions. "To the best of my knowledge this issue would affect retail copies in the United Kingdom and Nordic countries," he wrote. "We are aware of this mixup by whoever printed these codes for a completely different game from a different publisher, and are working on a...

Dead Island: Riptide edition with severed torso statue still available in Europe, Australia

The "Zombie Bait" edition of Dead Island: Riptide featuring a bloody, busty severed female torso is still available for purchase in some regions, despite public outcry over the statue when it was unveiled earlier this year. The special edition is still available in Europe and Australia, with some players already posting pictures to Twitter of their purchases. In a statement to CNET Australia, a representative for Koch Media said the Australian and New Zealand "Zombie Bait" editions have been made available in "extremely limited quantity" for "those customers who wish to purchase it." Deep Silver drew criticism when it first unveiled the special edition in January, with negative reactions pouring in via Twitter and other social sites. Deep Silver later issued an apology, stating they...
