EA's had a rough go over the following years, shuttering a number of studios, nurturing a more austere slate of games. Mirror's Edge never got a sequel. The Dead Space franchise gradually exchanged its slow, quiet horror for loud guns and explosive set pieces. Coming into this game, the franchises' trajectory seemed, to an outsider, shrewdly calculated. You can imagine a board room in which an executive says, "Gamers like co-op and train sequences and epic boss battles, so let's do more of that." After playing Dead Space 3, I wonder if maybe I've read the series all wrong. That this was the natural path for the story. The second video in four-part series Dead Space: A Journey Through Terror, "The Art of Scares," offers a look in the game's art direction and inspiration. "If the story is the brains and the gameplay its limbs, then the art direction must be at its heart," the video's narrator explains. The video explains the importance of lighting, which the narrator says is almost a character itself. Lighting can guide the player, create tension and lend character to settings. Decay is another important element of Dead Space's art direction — many locations are in a permanent state of disarray. But the game's most impactful artistic direction involves the Necromorphs. A four-part series called Dead Space: A Journey Through Terror will prepare players for the third game with a recap of gamplay, story and more. Part 1, posted today on YouTube, details Isaac Clarke's story so far, beginning with the distress call aboard the USG Ishimura and the first appearance of Necromorphs. The video wraps up the story of Dead Space 1 and continues to Dead Space 2, where Isaac awakens from stasis three years later. The second video, which covers the game's art, will release tomorrow. Dead Space 3 centers on a search-and-rescue mission on the frozen planet Tau Volantis, according to a story trailer released today by publisher Electronic Arts. The trailer highlights the two-player co-op team that makes its way through the campaign, John Carver and series protagonist Isaac Clarke. Check out our recent co-op preview of Dead Space 3 here. The launch trailer for the latest addition to the Space-horror series, Dead Space 3, shows protagonist Isaac's attempt to take down the Necromorph terror for good. The short video offers some combat-driven in-game footage with Isaac fighting against the game's numerous enemies, all to the dulcet tones of Phil Collins and "In The Air Tonight." Check out Polygon's recent interview with Visceral Games' Steve Papoutsis about what is necessary to keep the franchise strong, how to make create a sense of horror without making players weak and how the introduction of co-op requires the creation of a new form of horror. Dead Space 3 is set for release on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC on Feb. 5.

Dead Space 3 players will have access to an armor set modeled after the uniform of Mass Effect 3's protagonist Commander Shepard, provided they've played the latter, EA announced today. The N7 Armor set will be unlocked for any players who "own Mass Effect 3," according to the announcement video above; though players just need to have a save game from Mass Effect 3 on their hard drive to get access. Any potential non-aesthetic benefits that the Mass Effect armor provides aren't revealed in the trailer, though based on the carnage of said video, we're assuming it doesn't make Isaac Clarke any less capable when it comes to killing Necromorphs. Dead Space 3 launches Feb. 5 for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, while a demo is available now for the latter two platforms.

Dead Space 3 will be the first game to support Kinect voice commands in co-op play, according to executive producer Steve Papoutsis of Visceral Games, the narrator of an overview video released today by publisher Electronic Arts. Players will be able to shout at their TV for actions such as navigation ("find objective"), combat ("quick heal"), items ("access inventory") and keeping track of their buddy ("find partner"). Papoutsis also said last month that Dead Space 3 will include hidden voice commands triggered by shouting expletives in certain situations. The last time we played Dead Space 3, the Kinect commands were only working about half the time, so we're hoping the final game will feature a better implementation of the technology. Black makers? Necromorphs? Space engineers? If you're planning to play space thriller Dead Space 3, but don't know what unitology is or how Isaac Clarke got sucked into this whole mess, you probably should watch this video. Three minutes and thirty seconds of video neatly wraps up the events of Dead Space and Dead Space 2 and prepares gamers for the Feb. 5 release of Dead Space 3.
