Origin update embraces powerful PCs, tweaks interface, achievements and more

An update for Origin, Electronic Arts' digital distribution service, adds options for powerful computers, tweaks the interface, achievements and more, according to an update posted on the official website. Origin version 9.2.1 adds a new "multilauncher" for 64-bit systems that gives "additional options for taking advantage of your hardware when starting supported games." Origin's Application Settings menu has also been revamped, and users can now track achievements and the Origin Points they earn from playing Battlefield 3, Mass Effect 3, and Dead Space 3 on their profile page. From Dead Space to Destiny: Joe Cross' Dead Space 3 concept art

Joe Cross' artistic influence is everywhere in Dead Space 3, and you don't have to look any further than his concept art to prove it. Working with Visceral Games, Cross coordinated with art directors and environment leads to paint the frozen landscapes and corridors, vehicles and characters that would set the visual tone for the recently released game. Dead Space 3 infinite resource mining is 'not a glitch,' says EA

A Dead Space 3 mechanic that allows players to farm infinite resources otherwise available through microtransactions is no glitch, and Electronic Arts has no intention of changing it, GameFront reports. Following the game's release, speculation arose that resource farming could be considered stealing in light of the microtransactions. Players can loot infinite material from lockers, chests and enemies for crafting, rather than purchasing them. Dead Space 3's action-heavy gameplay was "a necessary evil in order to broaden the fan base," according to Antony Johnston, the award-winning writer of the original Dead Space. Dead Space 3 Awakened DLC coming in March for $10

Dead Space 3 launched today, and players will be able to continue their experience next month with the launch of the Awakened add-on, publisher Electronic Arts announced today. Details are scant at the moment, but the DLC will be available for $9.99 on PlayStation Network and Windows PC, and 800 Microsoft Points on Xbox Live Arcade. In Awakened, said EA, "players will experience the franchise's darkest chapters as the Necromorph battles become even more gruesome and terrifying than ever before." Dead Space 3-branded watch will only be worn by 500 fans

EA is opening up pre-orders on a Dead Space 3-branded watch, only 500 of which will be made, the company revealed on its official EA Gear website. The Meister Watches-designed CEC Engineer-Class timepiece matches that worn by Dead Space 3 protagonist Isaac, which releases this week on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The watch features a copper and stainless steel bezel, black rubber strap, carbon fibre dual-layer dial, Japanese 3-hand and date quartz movement and 100m of water resistance. In addition, the Dead Space 3 logo is laser-inscribed onto the back of the piece along with an individual number. It is currently priced at $265.

Dead Space 3 includes four unlockable game modes

Dead Space 3 will include New Game Plus, Classic, Pure Survival and Hardcore modes for players to choose from, executive producer Steve Papoutsis revealed on the Dead Space developer blog. Each mode is included on-disc and can be unlocked after beating the game once. New Game Plus will allow players to start a new file with previous upgrades and arsenal. Classic mode, which Papoutsis calls "for the DS1 veterans out there," is single-player only, uses classic aiming and requires players to build weapons from blueprints. Dead Space 3 players get Commander Shepard's armor with Mass Effect 3 save

Dead Space 3 players will have access to an armor set modeled after the uniform of Mass Effect 3's protagonist Commander Shepard, provided they've played the latter, EA announced today. The N7 Armor set will be unlocked for any players who "own Mass Effect 3," according to the announcement video above; though players just need to have a save game from Mass Effect 3 on their hard drive to get access. Any potential non-aesthetic benefits that the Mass Effect armor provides aren't revealed in the trailer, though based on the carnage of said video, we're assuming it doesn't make Isaac Clarke any less capable when it comes to killing Necromorphs. Dead Space 3 launches Feb. 5 for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, while a demo is available now for the latter two platforms.
