DualShock 4 buyers test old games to create compatibility list

With DualShock 4 controllers now appearing on retail shelves, gamers are getting to grips with figuring out which PlayStation 3 games work with the new controller. A Reddit thread has been opened to handle the issue, offering an initial list of games. Users are being invited to add to the list. "I just got my DualShock 4 today, and have noticed some games work, and some don't," wrote thread organizer Lapwner. "So, let's try to create a list so people can see which games work and which games don't. Note that the motion sensing does not work, so even though some games work with the controller, if they are reliant on the motion sensing, then they probably aren't worth playing it with." The current list of compatible games includes: Working Call of Duty (MW2, MW3, Black Ops, Black Ops...

Horror director John Carpenter loves video games

John Carpenter is a noted film-maker whose work includes notable classics like Halloween, Escape from New York, Christine and Big Trouble in Little China. He's also a video game fan, who'd very much like to make a game of his own. "I'd love to work on an original video game," said Carpenter, in an interview with Giant Bomb. "Maybe the opportunity will present itself." Carpenter has dabbled with games in the past, narrating Fear 3, for example. But mostly, his involvement has been personal entertainment. "My son got me interested in console video games," he said. "The first game I remember playing obsessively was Sonic the Hedgehog ... I have many favorite games. Borderlands 2 is spectacular. I love BioShock, the Dead Space series, The Last of Us..." Horror has been a large part of...

At Comic-Con, optimism for future of video game movies

That was the theme of a panel today at Comic-Con, that asked whether we are emerging into a "golden age" of video game movies. The panel featured representatives working on movie projects including Agent 47, Mortal Kombat, Deus Ex, Dead Space and Need For Speed. They said that poorly scripted films, like Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (pictured above) should no longer be the norm. One indicator of impending change, according to various speakers on 'Video Games to Movies: Is the Golden Age Upon Us?,' is that Hollywood execs understand video games much more intimately than in the past. "What happened with comic books in the past is going to happen with video games," said Adrian Askarieh, producer of the forthcoming Agent 47, and of the much-maligned Hitman movie (2007). "People...

Dead Space Plasma Cutter replica uses lasers to burn through wood, plastic

Laser-Gadgets founder and crafter Patrick Priebe created a low-level working replica of Dead Space's Plasma Cutter. Priebe, whose previous works include an Iron Man gauntlet, laser tool and flame glove, demonstrates the Plasma Cutter's power to burn through wood and plastic in the video above. According to Gizmag, the homemade item uses three 30-milliwatt green lasers to aim and another two 1,500 milliwatt blue lasers to burn through objects. It weighs in at about 4.4 lbs and requires one 18650 and three 14500 lithium-ion batteries to run. Priebe does not provide a tutorial on how he created the Plasma Cutter, a project that apparently took around 200 hours to build, but will sell it for the right price.

Deliberately diegetic: Dead Space's lead interface designer chronicles the UI's evolution at GDC

Clarke barely survived his latest encounter with a cabal of zombie-like enemies. There's no way to know what's around the next corner, and supplies are scarce. He uses the computer built into his space suit to check his status. A holographic projection appears in front of him, and Clarke cranes his neck as he cycles through his remaining ammo and supplies. When a player invokes the user interface in a Dead Space game, it appears within the game's world. The holographic projection of Clarke's supplies appears to the user on the other side of the TV or monitor just like it would to Clarke in the game. At a GDC 2013 panel, developer Dino Ignacio, Visceral Games' lead UI designer, explained Dead Space's design philosophy and chronicled its evolution throughout the series. Diegetic by...
