Two GOG sales cut prices on Fez, The Banner Saga, Spelunky, more

GOG.com is offering two concurrent promotions with deep discounts on a variety of games from major publishers and indies such as Fez, Alan Wake and Spelunky, the digital distribution platform announced today. To mark St. Patrick's Day, the "Luck of the Irish" sale allows customers to put together their own five-game bundles from a selection of 25 titles that are discounted by as much as 90 percent. Any or all of the five choices in the bundle can be a "Pot of Gold," in which GOG will randomly select a game that isn't listed among the 25 options. The deals on that list include Mossmouth's Spelunky for $3 (regularly $14.99), Facepalm Games' The Swapper for $3 (reg. $14.99), Polytron's Fez for $2 (reg. $9.99) and Remedy Entertainment's Alan Wake for $3 (reg. $29.99). Deadly Premonition PC version modded to add display options

The Windows PC version of Deadly Premonition doesn't live up to the visual potential of the platform — in its default state, it's locked at a resolution of 1280x720 — but a hastily developed mod is already available to fix that drawback. Developer and publisher Rising Star Games released Deadly Premonition: The Director's Cut on PC yesterday with no options to tweak display settings or resolution, Steam users reported. Mod developer Peter Thoman, who is known by the moniker "Durante" online, quickly put together a mod for the game that allows players to change rendering and resolution settings. He posted a screenshot of the Director's Cut running at 2560x1600 (full image below) along with the "DPfix" mod, which can be downloaded here. "This is the 0.1 alpha release, so don't...

How to sell coffee ... and design a successful indie game

Hidetaka Suehiro — aka Swery, the director of cult hit Deadly Premonition — took the stage at today's BitSummit conference in Kyoto to advise Japanese independent developers on how to create successful games. It's like opening a coffee shop, Swery said, pointing to a PowerPoint projected at the rear of the stage. His advice was divided into four parts. 1) Selecting the beans According to Swery, many Japanese indie developers tend to stick to the same types of games they made at traditional studios. He thinks this decision is counterintuitive, pitting the lone developer against full-size teams operating fueled by larger budgets. "You're independent now," said Swery. "Be more creative." He pointed to Unfinished Swan, Journey and Sword & Sworcery as examples of Western indie games...

How Hideteka 'Swery' Suehiro aims to bring Deadly Premonition to a new audience

Deadly Premonition is a divisive game. Those who love it embrace its absurdity. Those who don't, well, many tend to hate a game where the normal course of events sees a man in a gas mask ordering a turkey, strawberry and cereal sandwich. You don't have to take our word for it. The 2012 Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition gave Deadly Premonition an award for the "Most Critically Polarizing Survival Horror Game," citing review scores that ranged from 2 to 10 out of 10. That was 2010. In 2012, the game's creator, Hideteka "Swery" Suehiro, has teamed up with publisher Rising Star Games to remake Deadly Premonition for PlayStation 3. Deadly Premonition: The Director's Cut will bring refined controls, higher resolution graphics coupled with redrawn art assets, and an expanded story....

Deadly Premonition coming to PS3 with Move functionality

Deadly Premonitions is being remastered for the PS3 with new content, "scenarios" and PlayStation Move functionality, ex-Marvelous CEO Yasuhiro Wada revealed to Joystiq today. The game, which launched in Japan on PS3 (as Red Seeds Profile), but only came stateside on the Xbox 360, is being worked on by Wada's new, two-person studio Toybox Games, as well as a development team led by Hidetaka "Swery" Suehiro. Yasuhiro teased the project during a GDC panel earlier today, hinting that a full reveal might come during E3. We suppose his excitement was too robust to contain, though we're still waiting to see what "scenarios" Yasuhiro and Swery have in mind. Maybe a scene where the protagonist eats a turkey, strawberry and cereal sandwich at the behest of a gas mask-wearing, wheelchair-bound...
