When a successful game is a failure

I've been reporting on the development of Hidden Path's Defense Grid 2 since April of 2013. I've read all of the design documents and industry reports. I've interviewed every member of the Defense Grid 2 team. I've been in rooms where even certain members of that team aren't allowed. And yet, month after month, the story of what exactly happened with the launch of the original Defense Grid has eluded me. They've simply not wanted to talk about it — on or off record. Part of why the founders don't tell this story relates to the business of making video games itself. A game that doesn't ship isn't always a failed game. Technology can be retooled, assets redirected, entire ideas shelved and then resurrected years later. The work put in on one game may lead to new work on something else,...

Defense Grid dev donates $20K in game codes to veterans fundraiser

Defense Grid developer Hidden Path Entertainment has donated $20,000 worth of game codes to Operation Supply Drop's 8-Bit Salute fundraiser for military veterans, the studio announced today. The donation consists of 1,000 Steam codes for the $19.99 Defense Grid: Containment bundle, which includes Defense Grid: The Awakening and its You Monster and Containment add-ons, along with four "Resurgence" maps. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 developer Treyarch has also contributed to the 8-Bit Salute this year. Through its 8-Bit Salute fundraiser, Operation Supply Drop is looking to collect video games and gaming gear that it can send to U.S. military personnel who are deployed in combat zones and recovering in hospitals. Last year, the organization raised more than $58,000 worth of games and...

Defense Grid 2 gets a funding boost from Dracogen investment injection

CEO of XE.com and head of Dracogen Strategic Investments, Steven Dengler, is investing the remaining funds required to finish Hidden Path's Defense Grid 2, GamesBeat reports. The strategy tower defense game was successfully crowdfunded in August last year, receiving a total of $271,726 in pledges from 6,291 backers, surpassing its $250,000 goal. However, the game required further funds for polish. On the topic of independently funded games, Dengler told GamesBeat that he thinks what is "broken in the industry" is that publishers want game developers souls, so self-publishing "has to become a better option." "Jeff didn't have to twist my arm," he said. "I'm not in this to make my fortune. This gets a game out there that people want to play. I don't want to own part of the company. I...

Defense Grid: Containment coming to Steam Jan. 23

Defense Grid: Containment, indie developer Hidden Path's tower defense expansion, will release on Steam Jan. 23, Joystiq reports. Containment is not a full version of Defense Grid 2, but rather an expansion to the first game, Defense Grid: The Awakening. It will be available for $4.99, or as a $19.99 bundle with all of the Defense Grid content to date. Defense Grid 2, a Kickstarter project funded in August 2012, hit its requirement of $250,000 to fund its minimum goal, Containment. The expansion is a sequel to 2008's Defense Grid: The Awakening and picks up directly after its predecessor. Containment includes eight levels, a new story, 32 challenge modes and two new characters. Backers will still receive a copy of Defense Grid 2 when it releases.
