Glyph is a new DRM-free games platform from Rift developer Trion Worlds

Trion Worlds, the developer behind Defiance and Rift, unveiled Glyph this week, a new digital games service that will launch following GDC 2014 with DRM-free titles and no always-online requirement for single-player games. According to a press release from the developer, Glyph will serve as "a digital hub" for PC games and related goods from Trion and "hand-picked partners," which Trion began signing to the service earlier this year. Trion is encouraging developers interested in the platform to contact Glyph. "In the past three years, we've reached more than 10 million gamers, supported 25 million transactions, and more than 50 million downloads have happened across our network," said Scott Hartsman, CEO of Trion Worlds. "This shows that we've got an audience of dedicated gamers...

In Arkbreaker, players will be exactly that — Arkbreakers, investigating and clearing summonable dungeons packed with baddies and new gear. The pack is available on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC for $9.99 and free for Season Pass holders. Players who purchase Arkbreaker will receive access to a ton of content exclusive to the DLC, including a new mission line that allows players to call down arkfalls, bonus challenge areas for up to 24 players. Defiance producers getting the hang of things for season 2

"It took us a while to understand how long everything took and how to coordinate it well. Which is normal for a show, but we just had so many moving parts that it took us a while," said Michael Nankin, the co-executive producer and director of the television show, in an interview with Polygon at New York Comic Con this past weekend. According to Nankin, the makers of the series employ a person whose sole job is to handle the crossover with Trion Worlds' Defiance game. They would have weekly meetings to figure out the details of the collaboration, but "it's become less frequent now in the second season, because like everything else, we've kind of learned how to do it," said Nankin. A major part of the connection between the series and the game is that the story runs in real time, so...

Defiance DLC trailer introduces Dark Matter Arkfall events

A new trailer for Defiance focuses on the new Dark Matter Arkfalls developer Trion added to its MMO shooter. According to the official community site, there are two types of new Arkfall events, Major and Minor. Minor events last for up to 20 minutes and might pit players against waves of Dark Matter enemies or task them with destroying an Arkfall core. Major events, on the other hand, might last as long as an hour. The official post mentions only one Major event, a multi-stage battle in which players must contend with both Dark Matter waves and an Arkfall core before taking on the Monolith itself. Players who participate in Arkfall events will get rewards like money, XP and Keycodes as well as Lockboxes for defeating the Monolith. These new events were added to the game alongside...

Trion Worlds appoints former CCO as new CEO

Trion Worlds, the developer behind games like Rift and Defiance, has appointed its former chief creative officer, Scott Hartsman, to the role of chief executive officer effective immediately, according to a statement. Scott Hartsman was formerly the executive producer on Rift and CCO of Trion Worlds. He resigned from the studio in January of this year, saying that he'd had an amazing time "working with some of the best developers anywhere, getting the company's first game off the ground, taking it all the way through a multitude of amazing updates, then to Storm Legion, and even a little beyond." In an email to the company sent out today, Hartsman said: "We're going to be laying the groundwork for a new strategy for Trion — one that's closer to the foundation of how we've had our...

Defiance's first DLC adds complexity as well as content

Defiance, Trion Worlds' bombastic MMO shooter, has always seemed like a sturdy base product that was ready to be expanded. With its upcoming, first DLC pack, Trion plans to do just that. During a hands-on demo of the DLC at E3 2013, we got a chance to tool around with some of the content's biggest new features, which look to bolster the game in a number of meaningful ways. First up is a third playable race for characters to choose from: The gaunt, pale Castithans. If there were any mechanical differences to the class, they weren't apparent during our demo, but the aesthetic differences for the Castithans — a prominent race in the TV show's fictional, titular town — were striking. It's not just their pigmentless skin and hair tones that set them apart from the game's burlier races;...
