See the Deus Ex fan film that was two years in the making

More than two years since it was first teased, the Deus Ex: Human Revolution fan film launched earlier this week on YouTube. Running 12 minutes, it features the kind of production values and special effects one might expect from a commercial work. Human Revolution — Deus Ex is written, directed, produced and edited by Moe Charif, who also plays Adam Jensen in the film. Though it borrows characters from the 2011 game by Square Enix, the movie is not a straight adaptation of the game's plot. An official movie adaptation of the Deus Ex series is in the works, to be directed by Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose) and co-written by C. Robert Cargill.

GameStop, Tomb Raider, and how retail and online competition remains unfair

They were to open sealed PC copies of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, remove the coupon that offered a free digital version of the game, throw it away, and then sell those copies as new after resealing the boxes. Later that day GameStop removed the game from store shelves entirely. The result was Square Enix releasing a statement that supported GameStop’s ability to sell, or not sell, anything it wanted. The stores were given copies of the game without the coupon, and life went on. The message was clear and unmistakable however: If you mess with GameStop’s ability to sell a game, or if you think you can use their stores to even indirectly promote a digital service, the retailer has no problems with punching you in the virtual throat. It will be awhile before the digital stores are...

Deus Ex voice actor fired from lead in Far Cry 3 over voice confusion concerns

Voice Actor Elias Toufexis, known best for his role as Deux Ex: Human Revolution lead Adam Jensen, was fired from the starring role in Far Cry 3 as Ubisoft worried gamers would confuse both protagonists, Toufexis said during the MCM Comic Con in London. Toufexis worked on Far Cry 3 for two years while recording the voice of Jason Brody until the 2011 release of Deus Ex: Human Revolution when Ubisoft feared the voices between characters were too similar. According to Toufexis, the distinctive nature of his voice has "lost me jobs." "In fact, I shouldn't say this, but there's a game called Far Cry 3, which I'm sure you guys know, where I had played Jason Brody," said Toufexis. "I played him for two years, did the voice and when Deus Ex came out they replaced me because they were...

Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut review: all tomorrow's parties

When Human Revolution first came out in 2011, it was praised for its dark, fascinating world, stealth-heavy gameplay and commitment to player choice. The Director's Cut improves on this vision, smoothing the rough patches and offering excellent second-screen play. The plot — which takes plenty of turns throughout the course of the game — concerns Adam Jensen, a cybernetically enhanced security chief with a tragic past and a tough-guy demeanor. Jensen lives in 2027 Detroit, in a bleak future that sees Earth torn apart by war and all but ruled by powerful corporations, not least of which is Sarif Industries, his employer. In the grand cyberpunk tradition, there are shady deals afoot, vast conspiracies at play and plenty of philosophical hand-wringing about the price of technology and...

Deus Ex: Human Revolution PC owners offered Director's Cut for $4.99

PC players who already own Deus Ex: Human Revolution will be able "augment" their copy with the game's Director's Cut at a heavily discounted price, Phil Elliott, head of community at Square Enix Europe announced on the Square Enix blog. Owners of Deus Ex and Missing Link DLC can grab the Director's Cut for $4.99. (£3.49/€3.99). Those who don't own the game can purchase the Director's Cut for $19.99 (£12.99/€19.99) and players who own the game without DLC can buy it for $9.99 (£6.99/€7.99). The upgrade offer only applies to the Steam version of the stealth game. "Pretty straightforward, and that means that if you did invest in Human Revolution in the past, we're not trying to stitch you up with the Director's Cut, m'kay?" Elliott wrote. In development for 18 months, Deus Ex: Human...

Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut will cost under $60

The upcoming director's cut of Eidos Montreal's Deus Ex: Human Revolution won't be a full-price $60 retail game, a representative for publisher Square Enix told Joystiq. "We haven't announced prices, but it won't be a full launch price," said a public relations manager for the company. "It won't be $60." As Joystiq points out, that's in line with the listed prices at Amazon, Best Buy and GameStop — all of which have the Wii U version at $49.99, and the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions at $29.99. Square Enix has yet to announce a release date; the PR rep said the Director's Cut will be released "soon." Square Enix originally announced the Director's Cut on Wii U in March. During E3, the publisher said it would also be released on Xbox 360, PS3, Windows PC and Mac. Deus Ex: Human...

Mad science: Developers turn to science to build a better apocalypse

The infinite sadness of the schizophrenic neutron The infinite sadness of the schizophrenic neutron Two years ago, Irrational Games Creative Director Ken Levine approached Van Camp about educating his writing staff on the nuances of quantum mechanics. Although she'd never played the BioShock series, she readily agreed. "Like all scientists, I have strong feelings about what makes good science fiction," she says. Van Camp visited Irrational's Boston-area offices twice to "play professor," although she is quick to clarify that "my job was never to do story or character stuff. My job was simply to help them get comfortable with physics." For her first lecture, she gave the writing team a quick and dirty summary of the history of quantum mechanics. For her second, she stood...
