Polygon Plays: Deus Ex - Episode one

Greetings! Your humble Polygon reviews staff Arthur Gies and Phil Kollar have embarked on a dark cyberpunk adventure: playing through the Deus Ex series - and maybe some bastard offspring on the side. In this, our first episode, we go through basic training and realize that we are in way over our heads. Also, cinematic storytelling in games has come a very, very long way.

See the Deus Ex fan film that was two years in the making

More than two years since it was first teased, the Deus Ex: Human Revolution fan film launched earlier this week on YouTube. Running 12 minutes, it features the kind of production values and special effects one might expect from a commercial work. Human Revolution — Deus Ex is written, directed, produced and edited by Moe Charif, who also plays Adam Jensen in the film. Though it borrows characters from the 2011 game by Square Enix, the movie is not a straight adaptation of the game's plot. An official movie adaptation of the Deus Ex series is in the works, to be directed by Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose) and co-written by C. Robert Cargill.

Game designers talk about making the transition to academia

Game designers who have made the move to academia include Warren Spector (Deus Ex), John Romero (Doom), Brenda Romero (Wizardry) and Richard Lemarchand (Uncharted). At GDC's education summit yesterday they shared their experiences of teaching the next generation of game makers. "For many students this is the first class they have ever taken in game development," said Brenda Romero. "I see the first time they are in the classroom and someone is validating what they want to do. To see their passion is like a drug to me." Romero and her husband John are in charge of a program at the University of California, Santa Cruz. "It's a blast getting to work with people who know how to code but they want to learn about design and how to make great games," said John. He and Brenda are still...

Hibernum hires former Ubisoft, Eidos exec

Montreal-based contract and casual house Hibernum Creations has hired former Ubisoft and Eidos exec Stephane D'Astous as chief operating officer. In the last ten years, D'Astous worked as director of operations at Ubisoft Montreal and general manager of Eidos Montreal, where he helped steer the likes of Deus Ex Human Revolution and the new Thief. Following his departure from Eidos last year, he was highly critical of the company's performance. "The lack of leadership, lack of courage and the lack of communication were so evident, that I wasn't able to conduct my job correctly," he said at the time. "I realized that our differences were irreconcilable, and that the best decision was unfortunately to part ways." Hibernum is best known for working on mobile projects such as Calling All...

Laika Believes rebranded The Sun at Night, launches Feb. 4

The Sun at Night, Minicore Studios' 2D action platformer formerly known as Laika Believes: The Sun at Night, is slated to launch for Windows PC on Feb. 4, 2014, with ports for Mac, Linux, and PSN/ PS Vita expected at a later date, founder John Warren wrote on the studio's blog. The Sun at Night was rebranded due to the requests of Laika LLC, the animation studio behind animated film Coraline, who thought the game's title would cause confusion between the two brands. "Despite feeling like this confusion is minimal at most considering the historical nature of the name, we want to avoid an escalating legal situation," Warren wrote. "This ongoing conversation has been the reason for our radio silence about The Sun at Night. I'm happy to be ending that silence today. The Sun at Night is...

Deus Ex voice actor fired from lead in Far Cry 3 over voice confusion concerns

Voice Actor Elias Toufexis, known best for his role as Deux Ex: Human Revolution lead Adam Jensen, was fired from the starring role in Far Cry 3 as Ubisoft worried gamers would confuse both protagonists, Toufexis said during the MCM Comic Con in London. Toufexis worked on Far Cry 3 for two years while recording the voice of Jason Brody until the 2011 release of Deus Ex: Human Revolution when Ubisoft feared the voices between characters were too similar. According to Toufexis, the distinctive nature of his voice has "lost me jobs." "In fact, I shouldn't say this, but there's a game called Far Cry 3, which I'm sure you guys know, where I had played Jason Brody," said Toufexis. "I played him for two years, did the voice and when Deus Ex came out they replaced me because they were...

Deus Ex movie will be a cyberpunk film, not video game film

The live-action film adaptation of the Deus Ex video game series will be a cyberpunk movie, not a video game movie, according to co-writer Robert Cargill. Films based on video game universes have in the past left a lot to be desired — many have been characterized by bad scripts, poorly-developed characters and a lack of care for the IP. Cargill said during San Diego Comic-Con last week that he'd originally been less than confident about the Deus Ex film when he was first approached to co-write the script, but Eidos Montreal's willingness to hand the reigns of the story over to the writers gave confidence. "It's not a video game movie, it's a cyberpunk movie," Cargill said. "Eidos Montreal has given us a lot of freedom in terms of story; they want this movie to be Blade Runner. We want...
