Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls review: human shield

It's not like the developer has been ignoring Diablo 3 since the controversy of its launch in 2012, or its subsequent massive sales success. Just a few months later, Blizzard added the Paragon experience system and new player selectable difficulty tweaks along with regular patches. But Blizzard has been saving the biggest changes for Reaper of Souls, Diablo 3's first expansion. Blizzard has a history of making major changes to their games in the wake of extensive player feedback, and Reaper of Souls is no exception. The much-maligned auction house? Gone. Difficulties? Completely changed. The Paragon system? Reset and applied account-wide to every character. There's hardly an aspect of Diablo 3 that Reaper of Souls doesn't change, all in the name of player satisfaction. In fact R...

How bringing Diablo 3 to consoles made it better on all platforms

Diablo 3 is already available on PC and the last-generation consoles, and it's coming along with its expansion to PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One this August in the Ultimate Evil Edition. According to Blizzard Entertainment, the console version was developed somewhat separately from the PC version, and that has allowed the studio to make important improvements to both sets of platforms. Blizzard launched Diablo 3 on Mac and Windows PC in May 2012 to a mixed reception from longtime Diablo players. Some fans were immediately skeptical of Blizzard's plans to port the game to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but that version of the dungeon crawler was well-received upon its release last September. The studio proved that it put a lot of thought into adapting the title...

There and back again: the games returning to E3 this year

But seeing a game at E3 is no guarantee that you'll find it on retail shelves or in digital marketplaces the same year. Or, in some cases, the next. As games get bigger, development timelines get longer, and some games make more than one appearance at E3. Here are the games we've seen before, set to return to on stages and booths this week in Los Angeles. BAYONETTA 2 Bayonetta 2 has been around and unreleased for almost two years years. First revealed in September 2012, we learned last year at E3 that the Wii U exclusive is scheduled for a 2014 release with a two-player mode. We also went hands-on with the game at a pre-E3 event last year, so be sure to check out our impressions of Bayonetta 2, which is headed to Japan this summer. The bundle will cost $59.99 on PS4 and Xbox One, and $39.99 on PS3 and Xbox 360. Blizzard previously told Polygon that the developer's goal is "to bring Diablo 3 to as many players as possible," though it isn't making any announcements now. Culinary warriors can submit their creations to an email address available through the link above. Blizzard will send "the most creative, tasty, and aptly-named recipes" to kierpanda, who will choose her favorite to feature on Eat Game Live. Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls - Overview video

The expansion, and the mechanic-tweaking overhaul that preceded it in the form of the "Loot 2.0" patch, moves faster than its vanilla counterpart. More than ever, the game turns enemies into legendary-item-filled piñatas, and gives players larger and larger broom handles with which to bash them open. Whoa, hey! There's some Rolos in here, too! How did you know Rolos are my favorite, Diablo? Join Arthur Gies and I as we smash our way through the expansion's new offerings, like the heavily armored Crusader class and bite-sized Adventure missions. Watch as I give Arthur invaluable fashion advice, like, for instance, how to make his character not look like Ronald McDonald.
