How Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition tricked us into playing Diablo 3 again

Once again, Diablo 3 has buried its brimstone claws into the gaming community — this time in the form of the Ultimate Evil Edition on consoles. What's changed since the action-RPGs last, insidious incarnation? Well, for one thing, the font looks far less menacing, falling far short of the "Ultimate Evil" designation promised on the box. For more insightful insight, check out the Overview video posted above.

Want to save time and money? Stop buying games at launch

The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 editions of Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition have just been released for $60. For that price you get the full version of Diablo 3, a bunch of social features, the Reaper of Souls expansion, and visuals that are much improved from the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 version. I’m happy to report that it’s the best version of the game so far, as I spend my evenings wrecking shit with my Demon Hunter. It goes further than that, though. The original PC version was a bit of a mess. It needed to be online to work, the real-money auction house was a controversial choice, and the loot was overwhelming. Every aspect of these flaws has been addressed in the console version, along with the ability to directly control your character and play almost as an action game. If...

1080p will come to Xbox One games, but at a cost

It's a magical bullet point on a list of features that proves that your game is next-generation, and there are groups of players online who sneer at anything that can't quite hit that goal. Diablo 3 on the Xbox One, for instance, couldn't quite get there. The original response was to drop the resolution down to 900p and keep the frame rate. A smooth game, many would argue, is worth sacrificing a few lines of resolution. The problem is that this solution created a PR problem for Microsoft, a company that is scared of consumers seeing the Xbox One as a less-powerful console compared to the PlayStation 4. "That's what we demoed and were showing around E3 time. And Microsoft was just like, 'This is unacceptable. You need to figure out a way to get a better resolution.' So we worked with...

Diablo 3 to run in 1080p on Xbox One as well as PS4 with day-one patch

Diablo 3's resolution on Xbox One will be bumped up to native 1080p with a launch-day patch, developer Blizzard Entertainment confirmed to Polygon today. "With a day 1 (August 19th) patch the Xbox One version of the game will display in 1080p at 60 fps," said a Blizzard representative in an email to Polygon. The update was first reported by GameSpot. Prior to installing the patch, the Xbox One version of Diablo 3 will run in 900p. Earlier, Blizzard had expressed hope that it would eventually be able to boost the resolution to 1080p, but indicated that it didn't expect to be able to get there by launch. The studio previously confirmed that the game runs in native 1080p on PS4; both versions feature a frame rate of 60 frames per second. Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition, the console...

You can export your console Diablo 3 save, as long as you're upgrading to Xbox One or PS4

Blizzard is launching Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls: Ultimate Evil Edition on the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4 on August 19, and the package contains the original Diablo 3 as well as the Reaper of Souls expansion that has already hit PCs. This is also the first time the game will be available on next-generation systems, so what do you do with your saved game and carefully constructed character from your PS3 or Xbox 360 if you decide to jump to another console? In an interesting, and increasingly common, move for consoles, Blizzard will allow you to export your save and bring it over to another console. "Played Diablo 3 on the PS3, but want to pick up and slay with Ultimate Evil Edition on the Xbox One? No problem!" the blog post states. "Previously mowed down some...

Blizzard's chief creative officer Rob Pardo leaves after 17 years

Rob Pardo, chief creative officer at Blizzard Entertainment and one of the lead designers of World of Warcraft, announced he's leaving the company today. "After 17 years at Blizzard, with long and careful contemplation, I have made a difficult and bittersweet but ultimately exciting decision to pursue the next chapter in my life and career," Pardo wrote in a farewell message. Pardo, 44, joined Blizzard in 1997 after a stint at Interplay. His game design credits include the original StarCraft, StarCraft: Brood War, Warcraft 3, Diablo 3 and more. Diablo 3's auction houses are gone for good on Tuesday

Diablo 3's ill-fated auction house shuts down for good on Tuesday, concluding two years that brought more controversy and abuse than value to the game. The real-money auction house was effectively closed back in March, and no transactions have taken place since then. June 24 marks its total removal from the game, so any player with items or gold still in the Auction House (undering the "completed" tab) must retrieve it by Tuesday or lose the goods forever. Diablo 3's auction house had a mostly troubled history since their introduction shortly after the game's 2012 launch. The auction house was taken offline more than once because of bugs and exploits, the most notorious incident being a gold duping bug back in May 2013 that caused major problems with the Diablo 3 economy. At Game...

How bringing Diablo 3 to consoles made it better on all platforms

Diablo 3 is already available on PC and the last-generation consoles, and it's coming along with its expansion to PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One this August in the Ultimate Evil Edition. According to Blizzard Entertainment, the console version was developed somewhat separately from the PC version, and that has allowed the studio to make important improvements to both sets of platforms. Blizzard launched Diablo 3 on Mac and Windows PC in May 2012 to a mixed reception from longtime Diablo players. Some fans were immediately skeptical of Blizzard's plans to port the game to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but that version of the dungeon crawler was well-received upon its release last September. The studio proved that it put a lot of thought into adapting the title...
