Gaming and parenting don't always mix, so I play with the devil

Hearthstone is actually a game that's very parent-friendly. The matches are relatively short, and the ability to play on a tablet means you can take the game with you while rocking someone to sleep. You’re given a relatively long amount of time to take your turns, which means someone getting up to get a drink of water or to use the bathroom in the middle of the night won’t ruin the game. Keep in mind that children have the bad habit of sometimes waking up suddenly, only to vomit all over themselves. It's a thing. With five kids there’s around a five percent chance that it’s going to happen on any given night, give or take. I'm sometimes tempted to ask developers how easy it will be to leave their game if this happens, and I'm stuck on bath and laundry duties while cleaning said puke...

PSN returns after daylong outage caused by DDoS attack

PlayStation Network is back online in North America following a daylong siege by hackers who even communicated a bomb threat to an airline in order to divert a flight carrying a top Sony executive. PSN and Sony Entertainment Network returned to service about 3 a.m. ET. A statement on the PlayStation Blog said the system was taken offline because of a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack. "We have seen no evidence of any intrusion to the network and no evidence of any unauthorized access to users' personal information," the statement said. Because of the outage, the regular maintenance scheduled for PSN in North America has been postponed. It was to have lasted from about 12 to 7:30 p.m. ET. The outage began sometime in the early morning Sunday; a hacker group claimed...

How Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition tricked us into playing Diablo 3 again

Once again, Diablo 3 has buried its brimstone claws into the gaming community — this time in the form of the Ultimate Evil Edition on consoles. What's changed since the action-RPGs last, insidious incarnation? Well, for one thing, the font looks far less menacing, falling far short of the "Ultimate Evil" designation promised on the box. For more insightful insight, check out the Overview video posted above.

Want to save time and money? Stop buying games at launch

The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 editions of Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition have just been released for $60. For that price you get the full version of Diablo 3, a bunch of social features, the Reaper of Souls expansion, and visuals that are much improved from the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 version. I’m happy to report that it’s the best version of the game so far, as I spend my evenings wrecking shit with my Demon Hunter. It goes further than that, though. The original PC version was a bit of a mess. It needed to be online to work, the real-money auction house was a controversial choice, and the loot was overwhelming. Every aspect of these flaws has been addressed in the console version, along with the ability to directly control your character and play almost as an action game. If...

1080p will come to Xbox One games, but at a cost

It's a magical bullet point on a list of features that proves that your game is next-generation, and there are groups of players online who sneer at anything that can't quite hit that goal. Diablo 3 on the Xbox One, for instance, couldn't quite get there. The original response was to drop the resolution down to 900p and keep the frame rate. A smooth game, many would argue, is worth sacrificing a few lines of resolution. The problem is that this solution created a PR problem for Microsoft, a company that is scared of consumers seeing the Xbox One as a less-powerful console compared to the PlayStation 4. "That's what we demoed and were showing around E3 time. And Microsoft was just like, 'This is unacceptable. You need to figure out a way to get a better resolution.' So we worked with...

Diablo 3 to run in 1080p on Xbox One as well as PS4 with day-one patch

Diablo 3's resolution on Xbox One will be bumped up to native 1080p with a launch-day patch, developer Blizzard Entertainment confirmed to Polygon today. "With a day 1 (August 19th) patch the Xbox One version of the game will display in 1080p at 60 fps," said a Blizzard representative in an email to Polygon. The update was first reported by GameSpot. Prior to installing the patch, the Xbox One version of Diablo 3 will run in 900p. Earlier, Blizzard had expressed hope that it would eventually be able to boost the resolution to 1080p, but indicated that it didn't expect to be able to get there by launch. The studio previously confirmed that the game runs in native 1080p on PS4; both versions feature a frame rate of 60 frames per second. Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition, the console...

You can export your console Diablo 3 save, as long as you're upgrading to Xbox One or PS4

Blizzard is launching Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls: Ultimate Evil Edition on the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4 on August 19, and the package contains the original Diablo 3 as well as the Reaper of Souls expansion that has already hit PCs. This is also the first time the game will be available on next-generation systems, so what do you do with your saved game and carefully constructed character from your PS3 or Xbox 360 if you decide to jump to another console? In an interesting, and increasingly common, move for consoles, Blizzard will allow you to export your save and bring it over to another console. "Played Diablo 3 on the PS3, but want to pick up and slay with Ultimate Evil Edition on the Xbox One? No problem!" the blog post states. "Previously mowed down some...
