Dishonored review: Crime and punishment

DISHONORED ISN'T A SHOOTER — IT'S FOCUSED ON STEALTH AND TRAVERSAL Dishonored drops you into a Moby Dick-inspired dystopia of plague and political machinations. It tells the story of Corvo, a royal bodyguard framed for regicide and thrust into the murderous power struggle for the whaling city of Dunwall. I was given just enough time to grasp the comparatively mundane aspects of Dishonored's mad science and political intrigue before supernatural forces came into play. Unlikely allies human and otherwise offer tools and assistance in Corvo's quest for justice — or revenge. It takes place from a first-person perspective, but Dishonored isn't a shooter, as such. Instead, the focus is on stealth and traversal of the multi-tiered, open environments of Dunwall. Arkane...

Dishonored's second DLC, The Knife of Dunwall, launching April 16 for $10

Dishonored's second downloadable add-on, The Knife of Dunwall, will be available April 16 worldwide for $9.99 on Windows PC and PlayStation 3, and 800 Microsoft Points ($10) on Xbox 360, publisher Bethesda Softworks announced today. The company teased the DLC yesterday with a screenshot, which is one of three images available below. The add-on was rumored to be called "The Other Side of the Coin," a name based on leaked PS3 Trophies. (Note: Some Dishonored spoilers follow.) In The Knife of Dunwall, you play as Daud, the leader of the clan of supernatural assassins known as The Whalers. Daud is the man who kills Dunwall's Empress — the act that sets Dishonored's story in motion — but he later comes to regret it. Seeking redemption, he is given a directive by The Outsider: Unravel...

Bethesda teases Dishonored DLC with image showing rival assassins

Bethesda will make an announcement regarding new Dishonored content tomorrow, and released an image today featuring the weaponry of one of the game's shadowy antagonists, Daud. The image, posted above, shows a masked figure overlooking the game's opening scene, in which Daud's assassins murder the region's ruling Empress. The figure is holding an Assassin's Blade — one of the collectible weapons Corvo can find later in the game, at Daud's flooded hideout. Last year, Bethesda revealed that the game's second DLC pack would focus on Daud and his band of assassins. "Daud, the leader of a group of supernatural assassins known as 'The Whalers', will be the focus of the second add-on pack, scheduled for release in early Spring 2013," Bethesda wrote. "Make your way through new Dunwall...

PS4 8 GB memory a 'joy,' says Dishonored lead level designer

The 8 GB of memory included in Sony's upcoming PlayStation 4 console is "a joy" for Dishonored level designer Christophe Carrier, the developer told Eurogamer. Carrier said that more memory means developers can include more content in their games, allowing them to keep assets that would normally have to be cut to save space. Carrier said that when building Arkane Studios' games, memory has been the most important thing to consider. "As a level designer we are struggling against memory every day," he said. "We cut things, we remove things, we strip things, we split the levels, we remove NPCs from levels because there's not enough memory. "So knowing that memory is something that is going to be improved in the next generation of consoles: to us, it's a joy. It's something that we were...

Dishonored DLC, The Other Side of the Coin, reportedly leaked via PSN Trophies

Dishonored's second downloadable add-on could be called The Other Side of the Coin, if a list of PlayStation Network Trophies on PS3 Trophies is anything to go by. In October, publisher Bethesda Softworks announced three planned DLC packs for Dishonored. The first, Dunwall City Trials, was released in December. The second was not named at the time of the announcement, but Bethesda said it would focus on Daud, who leads a crew of supernatural assassins called The Whalers. Bethesda described the player's mission in the second add-on: "Make your way through new Dunwall locales and discover Daud's own set of weapons, powers and gadgets in this story-driven campaign. How you play and the choices you make will impact the final outcome." Here's the purported list of Trophies for The Other...
